lol Hi Franny girl (((hugs))) It's the truth, our power goes out all the time here and it's annoying...One day I honestly called up the power company and said..."Okay, who farted, I want their name and number" The guy on the other end was probably quite shocked judging by his silence...then he burst out laughing!

Project Will Send Your Messages to Aliens in Deep Space | Lone Signal | Space.com

that link is about a project asking internet users to use their computer to help send signals detailing the hydrogen atom and periodic table, etc. to a nearby red dwarf star system starting june 17th.

i won't be participating as it's almost absurd to believe there could be any life at all on the surface of a planet around a red dwarf much less for it to be intelligent enough to respond to us. i won't bore you with why that is. anyway, the signals eventually passing this system (in 17 years) means i suppose the project isn't completely dubious. i tried to sign up just to see what's going on but never got the email they stated they 'just' sent me (an hour ago), lol.

The whole thing is a REAL BAD idea anyway. Either a "money sink-hole project" to keep people employed or, at worst, a signal for E.T. (who is more advanced) to come and take over. If you believe Steven Hawking's philosophy ... I guess we should be either passively listening or trying to put a Faraday cage around the planet ;).

If it/they are truly "more advanced", that will only result in a better world.

C'mon down Mister alien Man. I'll vote for you as president.

I don't think we'll see a "Mars Attacks" scenario.

We don't KNOW.

Also, think of it this way. Let's say the American Indians could have sent out messages to Spain/Rest-of-Europe saying "Hey...'new' continent here!" 100 years before Columbus. Should they have sent the message?

I suppose the other argument is...we're already sending plenty of signals so it doesn't matter. If they are advanced they have found/will find us anyway.

Either way...no need for "space-message-dot-give-me-a-donation-dot-com"

hawking should stay in his discipline. the times i can recall when he's stepped out, he sounded silly.

i wasn't aware of a 'faraday cage'. i don't understand electricity very well at all.

i'd guess there's MAYBE 2 or 3 other planets in this galaxy that have intelligent life but the odds of one of them hearing us, being able to and finding it worthwhile to come here are remote.

That wasn't a Hawking quote, BTW. But I remember something about him saying it's a BAD idea to contact E.T....
