P.S.
You may be able to back the lattice with some wire mesh that they won't chew through.

You could also try some copper mesh stuffed into the areas they are chewing ... they don't like the feel of the copper on their teeth!

the crawl space is enclosed, with vents covered by 1/4" mesh. There must be small less obvious openings. Oh well. thanks for the suggestion
