Heya Bear, what are they planning to do to your ear ? and why?

I went to an ENT yesterday to get in under the December 31st wire. My ears have been "stuffed up" for months and it is affecting my hearing. So, he poked and looked in all orifices above the waist ($40 co-pay cha-ching), then escorted me to the audiologist (another $40 co-pay cha-ching). I felt like slapping HER because she REEKED of garlic at 09h15.

The test reveals I have lost some high and low end in the right ear, and left is normal for age.

The ENT prescribed a steroid course and generic Flonase. I'm supposed to see him January 3rd for a follow-up... to see if the 'roids provide relief. (Never occurred to me that anything after the 1st will be fully paid out of pocket.) Anyway, if I'm still whining about the stuffiness, we will discuss myringotomy to give the fluid build-up a way to drain.

When I got home:
... I saw the video
... I found that the cost is $2800 per ear
... it's NOT a permanent solution
... success rate is around 50%

As I said in the previous post: I do not THINK so.

I will put up with the stuffiness (there is NO pain or any discomfort) if the meds do not do anything. I'll chalk it up to being a senior and consider an aid if the hearing really goes south.

Plugging the nose and causing back pressure is free and non-invasive.

ETA: Look a the size of that post!!!!

Birmingham, Al
unstopping the stuffiness makes sense, draining with that success rate and cost doesn't.

besides, i think you can still get a low cost hearing aid for when you get even older

morning, bear!

thought you had a low-cost policy set up for january? i believe all the new ones now cannot exclude pre-existing conditions or impose a waiting period ..........

Low cost but high deductible. That's why it's low-cost!!! :) Premium plus $1200 out of pocket, then 20% after that up to an annual maximum. Hearing, vision and dental not included. Nor ambulance and a few other things.

Or... I could pay about $1000/month (maybe more in 2013) for a comprehensive policy, but that is NOT in the "budget" as set up by the financial guy.

calm down, bear! a visit to an ear/nose/throat specialist should be covered with just your copay. as to the deductible, 1200 isn't all that bad. and you will be surprised what happens to lab and other charges once they get submitted to the insurance company. my comprehensive blood tests which the hospital had billed at over 1000 bucks mysteriously got whittled down to about 90 bucks i was responsible for ............ same thing has happened with x-rays, etc
