BIT Broadband Says Bye, Bye
BRACEY — Three-and-a-half year’s ago, when Buggs Island Telephone Cooperative (BIT) was first awarded an 18.9 million dollar federal grant, they had big dreams. They were going to provide high-speed Internet access to underserved and un-served areas of rural Virginia.
A co-op based in Bracey, in Mecklenburg County, BIT’s plan covered a 15-county area. Home to nearly a quarter million people, the coverage area was to include Amelia, Brunswick, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Greensville, Halifax, Isle of Wight, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway, Prince Edward, Southampton, Surry and Sussex.
But, that dream is not going to be a reality. After having the federal grant suspended the beginning of this year, BIT had to submit a Corrective Action Plan, causing the suspension to be partially lifted. A final revised plan has been approved and the scope of BIT’s project is much smaller, cutting the service area by two-thirds....
on top of that, 15 million bucks were spent already and probably wasted since the equipment initially bought and installed turned out to be incompatible.
You should have warned me to stay off shopping sites. I just saved a bunch of money spending it.... :/morning, atty sunshine! is that phone off the hook?![]()
Good morning Atty
Sheesh Tibs....I hope that someday you can actually get a decent internet connection.
(I know you've explained this before, but i still don't quite get why you can't get decent speeds through your landline. My internet runs through my landline, not cable. 1-3 mbps isn't horribly fast, but enough to stream movies)
This isn't Pepper. I'm a beautiful......just kidding. morning, guys.![]()
DSL requires you to be close enough to a "switch" for it to work. Maybe that's why.
You should have warned me to stay off shopping sites. I just saved a bunch of money spending it.... :/
and the promised update on my broadband adventure ......................
naturally, my county is no longer includedon top of that, 15 million bucks were spent already and probably wasted since the equipment initially bought and installed turned out to be incompatible.
bit is now selling the spectrum necessary to provide service to the 10 counties left out in the cold to at&t. and so it goes ...........
Morning Pepper![]()
You may be right Atty, resulting in DSL not being offered at Tib's house. sigh.
