Last week, I sat in my classroom during our 5 minute break and used my Ego-T a couple of times... ordinarily I'd have gone outside for a cigarette but today I was being good (I also saved myself being late as it takes 2 minutes to get out of the building, 2 minutes back in and at least 2 minutes to smoke)...

But...

There was a really snotty lady in my class who gave up smoking using the Nicorette inhalator and told me so. In all honesty, many congratulations to her but it didn't work for me...it didn't even help me to cut down!

She quite literally looked down her nose at me while she was telling me that I was replacing one addiction for another! I rebutted all her statements but I was still left feeling rather miffed...

(On the other hand, I've been telling LOTS of people about it and really promoting e-cigs...I think I should be paid for it...!)

Does anyone else have experiences like this? I'm just wondering how other people dealt with them...x

I have not had a similar experience, but whenever people do something 'good for themselves' there's a tendency to get self righteous and know-it-all about it. It happens with weight loss, smoking, exercise, you name it. People tend to think if this program worked for me, and *I* had enough will power to do it, then anyone who doesn't do it *my* way is wrong and/or a loser with no will power or self control.

Not everyone who makes improvements acts this way of course, but it's not uncommon. LOL!

I honestly think the self righteous behavior of some ( and it sounds so in this scenario)is a cover up for deep down, that person is jealous. Most people don't have enough humility to even jokingly admit " Oh wow, I quit cold turkey. If only I had that! I'm sooooo jealous haha* Once someone is to that point of being completely quit from it all it tends to stick that way, and unfournatly think everybody else trying to quit should do it their way too. To those people I would keep it simple and say " I You know, I tried that( even if I hadn't just to make a point) and it just wasn't cutting it for me. This is though so you can think what you want but I LOVE it"

And another thing to think about it is that sometimes it can partly be due to perception or defensiveness on your part.

I lost a lot of weight and people were always asking me how I did it. I tried to answer them honestly with what I did and why I thought it worked for me. I never went up to people and just started talking about how they should lose weight and here's how, it was always a conversation started by the other person. It was surprising to me how many people started getting defensive and started angrily explaining why my way wouldn't work for them when I told them how I did it. I was very careful not to make judgements or say that my way was the only way, but sometimes people would take it as if that was what I was saying. KWIM? Now this didn't happen all the time, but a few times, and like I said, it was surprising the amount of defensiveness that can crop up when someone feels that their way of thinking is threatened.

I think it's just human nature to a large extent. We seem to be sort of programmed to defend our ideas, and get a big smack of cognitive dissonance when our 'ideas' are challenged. That cognitive dissonance can sometimes cause us to completely write off alternative solutions or ideas as *wrong* before we even rationally consider them.

ETA: this is not to say this is what the OP (or the woman he was talking to) did, I'm just talking about people in general. I'm certain I've gotten defensive over deeply held ideas. Which is why I think it's just human nature.

I would have told her very politely that I was happy for her that she could quit using the inhaler. I would also inform her that I had tried but it didn't work for. Only to add, now please push your glasses back up where they belong and mind your own business. I need my meds!

That kinda thing usually gets people to shut up. Hey, I'm happy for the woman but you choose another route. Don't let her get you down. vape loud and proud so others see it also.

I would be deleted if I wrote what I really thought about these kind of people. My stepfather is a know it all ...., never smoked a day in his life but is an expert on how to quit. He is also overweight but likes to preach to me and my sister on how we should lose weight.
Hold your head high, vape away and know you are healthier for it!

Spazmelda~Congratulations on your weight loss!!

Thanks! You want me to tell you how I did it? (It's the *only* way to do it, of course). LOL! Just kidding!
 I've been on this roller coaster before. Can and will lose these extra pounds...I had brain surgery this year and have to have back surgery next year. I am a workaholic that is not working right now...so gaining a few pounds is not the end of the world.

I'm not gonna lie, I like to stand my ground on any point I'm arguing, especially when I'm right, which in this case I am...

Using E-cigs IS the only way...FOR ME!

Heck I've not come this close to quitting the analogues in a really long time and I've not been this happy about it EVER! I will happily suggest it to smokers as an alternative but I'm sure that it's not for everybody. I envy those who can quit cold turkey but for the many, many people I know who've tried everything and still can't quit, this is gonna get my recommendation and a  from me!

As for losing weight...and going onto E-cigs...is there any mountain you can't climb?! Seriously, that's WICKED! Congrats!x

Well those types of people will always be around and you can have fun with them since they are easily angered. Now being a guy I would have said "Since we can't smoke in the building why don't you chew on this". A little play on then double mint gum thing, but I bet she would have gotten the point. Congrats on being smoke free and do not pay her any mind

Sorry the brain surgery didn't work. But isn't that kind of a radical way to lose weight? :)

As an extra bonus, the eCig alleviates emotional distress commonly found in other ways of quitting smoking which leads to road rage, going postal and self righteous nasty rude behavior towards others.

You did good, girl. Don't let her get you down. She's still suffering from those nasty side effects associated with the other "cures".

It is irksome when somebody judges you without being invited - on anything. I try to keep in mind that each time somebody knocks me it's a little easier to take the next punch. People are wierd and, unfortunately, love to spoil things for other people.

I think that's why I like this forum so much. I've had so much support, over a dozen honest, good transactions on the classies (where does that happen but here) and have met such positive people. There are good people that offset the idiot factor out there.

Love it. Next time I a "self righteous nasty rude" person spouts off to me, I am going to use this line. :vapor:

When she stopped to take a breath.

I said rude much , I don't know you from Adam.
So why on gods green earth do you think I give a rats back side of your opinion? If you guessed I didn't say backside you guessed right.:D

You should have seen the look on her face as she left.
At times being a cranky old F has it perks ;)

I find as I get older I suffer over opinionated rude fools less gladly.

Outside.

The original post in this thread, they were talking about vaping in a classroom. Honestly, I'm not surprised that someone said something. Inside, in a classroom, it doesn't surprise me at all.

But if I'm outside and someone comes up and .....es about my vaping, I'm probably going to have trouble being civil, much less polite.

:) I tend to do that to people when they get in my face about stuff like that too :) and :) about being an old fart. With age comes the right to be a cranky old ........

I'll usually ask if I am inside.

Also I am somewhat new to vaping, being here has helped me out a lot, I lurked first and just signed up last week or so.... after lurking for a little over a month. Friend of mine's daughter smokes and was telling her about vaping. She's young (think just 19 or 20 or so). Know she was complaining about the price of cigs, which always makes a good starting point to talk about vaping.

Loosing weight, congrats for the people that have. I was on the other end of that, and not able to gain weight. You get the same type of do-gooders giving you BS. The two or three times I has quit smoking helped me gain a little bit of weight. A lot of meds actually make you gain weight. A lot of it is what and how you eat but it is also as much metabolism and EVERYTHING you take into your body effects that. So wishing everyone luck on their venture for loosing or gaining weight. Small victories count becuase they add up to the goal. Former friend of mine lost over 100 lbs, his trick might not work for everyone but will pass it along. He changed his diet (always being on the go he ate fast food and all sorts of processed garbage) and started riding a mountain bike around his neighborhood to help kick start his metabolism. Going against the conventional wisdom when he lost a set amount of weight (not sure what it was 5lb maybe) he would allow himself to have something he liked and missed from eating healthy (say a donut or two, or a bit of cake or pie).....

.... point being is that if something works for you don't knock it. Life would be so boring if we were clones and what worked for one of us would work for all of us.

Lucky, the UK has the inhalers. I saw something about it when i was trying to quit smoking. Basically only available here in the US with a prescription.
