Was sitting at a campfire last night and a lady I had just met asked, "What is that thing?" I said it was a personal vaporizer, commonly called an "e-cigarette." She asked, "So you're quitting smoking?" and I responded that we (my wife & I) had already quit smoking and were now using our PV's as a better way to get nicotine.
Skip through the normal confused look and the usual spiel of what, how, when, whatnot of wanting to continue vaping after quitting smoking including a blunt "I like to smoke" and her responding "That's so sad, I feel sorry for you."
It finally dawned on me to ask her if she was offended by the smell (she was a long time ex-smoker) and she said that she couldn't smell anything at all. I told her that if she did smell anything that it would probably be root beer. "You're smoking root beer!?!?", "No, the liquid that contains the nicotine is root beer flavored." For some reason that's what made it all click and she asked me to show her how it worked, etc. I did the (what has become routine) breakdown and tour of my PV for her. By the end of it she was saying how neat it was and that she was going to tell some friends about it.
The moral of the story is: people can change their minds if you invest a few minutes in helping them get over the conditioning that they've been given regarding these issues. They can go from being mildly combative to accepting in a very short time.
