It appears the EU has banned all import of Snus in the EU as of Friday. This is even worse then the PACT act as we in the USA can still get snus, although with a higher price and more hassle. It looks as if you simply can't get it in the EU (except for Sweden of course)

Sometimes I can't even believe how ignorant some governments can be. I have to admit that it does make me the least bit nervous hearing about a ban like this. I think in the end though that it will be like anything else that is banned. People won't stop using it but will just find other ways to get it. If I understand correctly, the people in EU can't buy it in EU but can order it from the northerner US warehouse. What sense does that make? Unfortunately for the people in EU that means that they will be limited on what brands they can buy since as most of us know, there are several kinds that can't be sold in the US. I saw something in one of those articles you linked to about an open trade agreement or something like that which was established in EU. Perhaps that will come into play and this mess will get cleared up. All I can say is that I am glad I'm not in EU right now. I have high hopes that our govt won't ban it since they think they are collecting taxes on it now and also BT is jumping into the snus market.

Hitt, I'm still wondering and looking for articles on it. The only talk about it is from the snus community. This would seem to be a good source but the absence of anything in news is somewhat of a mystery. You'd think some news outlet would have picked up the story but perhaps snus is such a narrow market (at least in the public's mind) that it doesn't rate quick news response.

On the other hand, having BT getting involved in the market concerns me greatly. They have a habit of working on controlling their competition via regulation. I can't believe General hasn't tried to crack the convenience store market, but it's hit or miss on who may be carrying their products and usually only tobacco stores. I have a feeling BT has a hand in that.

I'd love to see Star come out with a decent snus product but I fear they will take the latest US direction and as with their solids keep the nic levels low but who knows.

I emailed General thru their website once asking why some of their listed distributors don't carry it in their stores. They said that they were working on increasing their US distribution but I would honestly be surprised if we see a can of general at QT beside the camel snus any time soon. I know that BT can be pretty sneaky most of the time but find it hard to believe that they could explain why their snus should be sold in the US but not Swedish snus. If Swedish snus were sold at convenience stores here in the US then the govt would definitely be getting their tax money on it and don't know that they care what product they are collecting the taxes on. Hell I'd be surprised if they didn't find a way to charge an import tax when it was shipped into the US and then a tobacco tax when it was sold.

Don't forget that BT was very much in favor of the PACT act along with convenience store owners. That had mostly to do with gray market cigarettes coming out of the reservations but smokeless tobacco got thrown into the mix. But it is going to be hard for BT to claim there snus is okay and the Swedish is not. I don't see the US being in the same position as the EU for a number of reasons. First off the USA has a long history of smokeless tobacco while the EU (except for the UK) doesn't. The ban in the EU was (is) for all moist snuff and snus got thrown in with it. Moist snuff is not going to get banned in the US as the south might start another civil war if it did. BT is also very much involved with smokeless. Both the traditional US type snuff and snus.

The thing to keep an eye on is some of the states attempting to bans flavored smokeless. That's what the nannies are going after.

More importantly, hasn't anyone been paying attention to what's happening in the middle east? Dictatorships and ruling classes are not the only governments where the general populations are fed up. They may have been pushed harder and longer, but everyone has a breaking point.

And even more important then that is they've been riling my dander greatly since shortly after Osama unpacked his bags at the White House. I did ease from my breaking point when Nancy "The sardonic woman" Pelosi got the boot, though.........

    Oh FFS.

I just logged on to Northerner to order another three months' supply and I discover that snus has been banned within the EU.

    This is a disaster.

I only use Northerner Purified now-a-days and I've only got 12 cans left. Okay, that's not exactly at crisis point I realise but I'm nearly out of citrus & menthol

Do I order from Northerner USA or not?
I don't want to get hit with either a confiscation or a massive duty charge.
Do I just quit when my stock runs out :(
I can fly from here to Sweden easily enough (it's only about 500 miles to Gothenburg) but maybe that's a bit extreme.

    Decisions, decisions

[ EDIT - Just noticed, it's my 2 year snus birthday tomorrow! ]

Seems reasonable enough to me. If I lived within 500 miles and imports got banned I'd consider hiking it.......

    Happy snus B-day :).
