I'm heavily dependent on snus, Dan, since I can't get enough nicotine from e-smoking to satisfy my addiction. So I snus and e-smoke at the same time, all day.

I've done 1812 and rather like it, but I like Lucky Strike even better. Tried Pall Mall? Not bad snus. None are "made in America." And, yes, all Swedish snus must meet food standards in quality and production cleanliness. Great stuff!

Camel is definitely sweetened to the American taste. I like it, but have to rotate it with something like Mocca+ or Lucky Strike. Another favorite is Mocca Pomegranate.

BooBoo: I use both. I love Stonewall Java (4mg) but also Swedish snus averaging about 6mg per portion. I only do portions of snus. Ariva is the weak sister of Stonewall, with about 1.5mg of nicotine.

The Ariva and Stonewall tablets can be ordered by any tobacco shop owner, to stock them locally for you. I've ordered from the Web -- I believe I used Lil Brown Smoke Shop -- but I'd suggest finding a local source. My shop owner ordered for me, then put a stack on his front counter. Now he can barely keep them in stock.

They are made by Star Scientific and any tobacco wholesaler should be able to get them for a shop owner.

Each Stonewall is 4mg of nicotine; Ariva is 1.5mg. Each tablet takes 30 to 45 minutes to dissolve -- no spitting. Basically, I only like the Java flavor, which can be had in both Ariva and Stonewall. In my area, they are about $4 per pack after taxes for 20 pieces per pack.

TBob,
I might be cat sitting for a friend soon, but her apartment building is non-smoking so I'm thinking of getting some snus in case I need more of a replacement than my Pilot provides.

I'm looking at ordering through buysnus and am tending mostly to the minis. Tried the Camel Frost awhile back and the menthol tingle was a bit too jolting for me - even though I mostly smoke menthols and love Cash's True Menthol.

After reading post here, am looking at the Mocca Pomegranite, Mocca Anis, and Catch Cassis Menthol.

Can you compare the initial "bite" of those to the Camel Frost?

Also wondering if you've tried the Röda Lacket White Portion? Sounds a bit mellower, though it's larger than I would prefer.

As a Menthol person I liked Röda Lacket alot. Another one that was good is Göteborgs Rape White(mini portion). The sample packs offered by most sellers really helped me decide what was the best taste for me. My first purchase was from The Northerner.

Thanks Noodles.
Thanks Noodles.

I thought about the mini pack, but it had some flavors I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like (Eucalyptus) and didn't include the Mocca flavors, which are the ones I'm most interested in trying.

How would you describe the taste of the Lacket? Was it mellower than other snus?

I was thinking the Göteborgs sounded interesting. The description sounded almost like gin flavoring though, which I don't care for. Was it like that or different?

Just to toss another taste opinion into this mix: I hated Goat Rape! And those I know who have tried it also hated it. Foul stuff. I've not tried Roda because it does not have a good reputation among snusers I know.

Mocca Pomegranate is my current favorite. Try Camel Mellow. The CatchDrys are mild and good. Wise products are very pure and often tasty.

You are either going to like the original "Swedish" flavors or you will find them disgusting. I'm somewhere in between, but tend to dislike them. Most have some "bite," by the way. I don't feel the Camel Frost is excessive in that regard. You want bite? Try General Wintergreen!

TBob,

Thanks for these points.
Taste is so subjective, isn't it? I think I won't get the Goteberg. Even with juniper, I find I like it in some things and not others. Don't think I'd like it in this.

Why does Roda not have a good rep? Is it inconsistent or poorly made?

I noticed the Wise (now Oomph?) brand is only available through Northerner. I did read a bit on the snuson board (scary place, that) about shipping/customs issues from them, which is why I was thinking of buysnus.
Any experience with that, yourself?

I like the way they combine lemon with flavors. I think I'd like that.
Guess I'll just have to get past the bite part. Sounds like the CatchDrys are my best bet on that.

One reason I use CatchDry is that it is sold in a local tobacco shop. General sells its products in the U.S., along with CatchDry.

I've ordered from both Buynus and The Northerner. I often compare prices at both, and just go with the cheapest one. They're both excellent sellers.

Snuson.com is .. ah, different, that's for sure. Lots of guys with hairy shoulders pushing new 17mg snus! When I began snusing about two years ago, I soon learned that if they liked something, I wouldn't. If they thought something was too sweet or weak, I'd love it.

There are some good folks there -- Premium Parrots is a buddy -- but don't buy into the "real men" stuff coming from some posters.

Man I have been wanting to try snuss for a cpl months now. Problem is that I just moved to Vermont and can't order it here. Some stupid law that only a suplier can order it. I order my baccy no problem. We just got the Cammel Snuss at my local tobaccenist but I havn't tried it yet. Heard that it is total crap compared to swedish snuss. Probaly gonna get a can eventually but I want it as it should be.
Rumer has it that big tobbacco produces this crap to make a quick buck on a new market and then discredit it as a crap substitute for analogs. Wouldn't put it above them.

Wrong, wrong, and .. wrong. The Camel snus was test-marketed last year and users complained it didn't have enough nicotine. So nicotine was added and now the anti's are saying it has too much, that it's more addictive than cigarettes. You can't please everyone.

But the taste is sweet and lasts forever. It's definitely not the foul, sour tobacco taste associated with many snus made in Sweden. I'm not sure where it's made, to tell you the truth, but Lucky Strike, Philip Morris' 1812, and Pall Mall are all made by Swedish snus companies.

It's Marlboro snus that got the rap of turning people off. It was very weak and extremely sweet. A bunch of true snus believers spread a story that this snus was marketed to give all snus a bad name and send quitting smokers back to cigarettes. Really? .. a big company would tarnish its top selling brand that way. Get real. Marlboro snus missed the mark, that's all. Expect a reformulated Marlboro snus before this year is out.

Skoal just entered the snus market, too, after testing last year. I love the cinnamon Skoal Dry. Nope, not Swedish. But good. And Camel is sure not "crap" to me. I'll be buying two tins a week.

I found that snus preferences differ greatly from person to person. When I got my first sample pack I had not been totally off analogs, but the best way I can describe Lacket is that it gave me that "ahh' feeling. Kinda like having a mint but without the "mint" taste. It was actually kinda sweet to me.

I did find that Catch Dry was a nice "happy place" for me tho. The flavor I tried was eucalyptus(never thought I would like that flavor). The Catch Dry to me atleast seemed like it was in between the two, Göteborgs Rape and Röda Lacket.

Göteborgs Rape definitely has more bite/flavor, so if the flavor is unappealing then this  happens!

I Agree with TBob that Catch Dry might be a good starting point.

I was one of those who found it weak when it was test marketed (I got three tins to test of the different flavors). I find it just about right for me now. Not so powerful that I get dizzy or nauseated, but enough to smooth me out.

E-smoking is still the closest to cigarette smoking though. If I can get the "hit" down, I'll be a happy e-camper. Snus mellows; a strong nic hit kicks.

Might give Camel another spin.

TBob and Noodles,

Thanks so much for the help.

I decided to order from Northerner:
CatchDry Cassis, Mini
Mocca Anis, Mini
Mocca Pomegranate, Mini
Nick & Johnny East, White Portion
Oomph Citrus & Menthol (3mg)
Oomph Licorice / Lemon (3mg)
Röda Lacket, White Portion

I do still smoke, but figure I can use these for when I housesit (as an extra with my Pilot, which is my home indoors helper) and when I fly. With menthol, pomegranite, cassis, lemon and anis in there, there should be something I like, since I generally like those flavors :)

The "ah" factor Noodles noted got me to decide to try the Lacket. Might be what I need when flying and there's a slight chance I may go visit a friend in London this year.

Thanks again for all the info, always best to hear what other's experience is.

That's a good sample list. Some very different snus there. Besides, I don't ever want to settle down to one snus. This is not like a favorite cigarette brand that you bought week after week, year after year. It's great to have different flavors to fit a particular mood or desire.

I figure with all that variety some of them should suit my taste.

Even with cigarettes, I switch it up. Mostly menthol, occasionally vanilla, but sometimes I prefer the strong kick of Gauloises or Perique. And on one visit to France, I tried some anise cigarettes, Royales I think, and loved them. Would have switched mostly over to them if they'd been available in the U.S.

Thanks again for the help.
