So I finally got the guts to do this ... not a bad result for a first shot

I will admit that I was a bit nervous after reading all the dire warnings. But now that I've done something extremely elementary, I'm ready to take a few more baby steps forward.

I worked my way into it by buying 2.4% (24mg/ml) JC premixed juices and "cutting" them with VG (from bulkapothecary.com ). Although I also got PG from the same source, I don't care for PG at all and have yet to use it.

I got 10% unflavored VG-cut nic. from ejuice4u.com ... I was impressed when they sent me their COA - although I confess I have no way of knowing exactly how to read it, or even whether I can trust it. They just seemed to be on the up-and-up.

Two 3ml. pipettes of the 10% were put into a 30ml bottle, followed by six 3ml. pipettes of VG, and a 3ml. pipette of nature's flavor menthol (which I had already tried mixing w/ JC tundra and VG as a test - I like it a lot). After dropping a little of the mix into my cheapie test clearomizer, I decided that I didn't have enough menthol, plus I had too much nic. So I just went by hand after that - squirting a bit more menthol into the bottle, and filling the rest w/ PG. I figure I ended up w/ 2.0%, which is about right for me.

I like Nature's Flavor's "crunchy granola" attitude towards ingredients, but I find it annoying that I can only buy their menthol flavoring in the 30ml size. Plus their sweet tooth on some of the others is too much for me (I've tried their vanilla, mocha, and mint chocolate - not my thing).

So now I'm going to see if I can come close to replicating what's in my other Vivi tank - a mix of JC TN cured with a splash of JC expresso, cut w/ VG. (I "fiddle" when I vape at home.) Right now, I just can't see myself doing anything sweet ... the experience with the Nature's Flavors vanilla, etc. really turned me off. I don't like sweet sodas either, unless they're in floats. But then I've ony been vaping for about five weeks now, and I quit analogs the first week. (I used to RYO w/ an injector machine, but generally I preferred full-flavor pipe tobacco w/ no added flavors. I'd been a 1-1/3 PAD smoker for about 40 years BTW.)

Right now I'm thinking that maybe I should be looking at the Amer. eliquids Manufacturing Standards Assn members as potential flavor sources (if any of them do that). I like the fact that I'm paying a lot less (about $0.14/ml. instead of $0.67/ml. for JC), and especially my ability to go w/ all-VG.

Plus of course, there's that old "doomsday prep" mentality that I guess many of us have about upcoming taxes and regulations. I really don't want to be paying retail markup, confiscatory taxes, and be limited to what my local B&M stores offer.

I need to read around here more. For now, I feel as if this may not be as hard as I'd thought, and I'm a lot less scared of DIY that I am of (say) sub-ohming. Maybe I shouldn't be. But then my needs are pretty simple: I'd like one "tobacco" flavor, one menthol, and maybe one other. Although I'm not sure what that "other" might be at the moment. I guess I'm to much of a noob to really have a sense of what I'll prefer over the next few months or years. At the moment, I'm still basking in the after-glow of having quit analogs :D

Comments, help, feedback (+ dire warnings, needed chastisement?) appreciated of course :)

Congrats Roger!

Thr best thing i can recommend is read .... read .. read, as there are many good things in this forum but it does take time to go through it all.

Regarding your DIY, some flavors will be better after steeping, I currently use mostly TFA, and Capellas flavoring for mixing. I would recommend using a E-Juice calculator to keep your mixes straight. There are a few free ones that are available. Try them out to find the one that works for you.

Good Luck in the Laboratory!!! :toast:

I'm so glad you managed your first DIY creation with ease :) and that you found it to be easier than you'd expected. It's not nearly as scary once you actually do it. I do like TFA flavors alot. They are easy to work with, imo. So are LorAnn. I've just recently purchased FA, FW, Capella, and Signature flavors and they are way different in percentages than the two I first mentioned so I have some studying to do myself.

I was like you when I first started out. I wanted about 3 flavors to begin with. I now have 12-15 and want to expand, hence all the new flavors I purchased. I've got my work cut out for me. Have fun!

Thanks everyone for the great advice :D

Okay so I'm on TFA's site now ... but I'm not sure whether particular flavors are appropriate for DIY. For ex., Perfumers Apprentice - Tobacco and Wood Flavors looks like it has appropriate flavors. I'm also looking at their coffees ... Perfumers Apprentice - Coffee Flavors (looks like I'm not the only person who likes mixing espresso w/ tobacco). And their menthols: Perfumers Apprentice - Menthol and Mint

Would it be correct to say that what I want are the flavors labelled as "water soluable?" (As opposed to anything w/ oil in it)?

DetraMenta - how do you manage having so many flavors? Do you have that many tanks/carts? I put Nature's Flavors mocha in my test clearomizer w/ PG last week, finally got the super-sweet taste out yesterday. Took forever.

PS.: Keith I did get syringes, but the first one didn't seem to work. (I.e. it didn't suck up liquid.) After that, I gave up and moved to pipettes. I'll try the others later, I have 9 more. Hopefully the whole pack isn't defective. I figure minor mistakes in quantities are okay for now, as long as I have an upper limit on how much 10% nic. base I use (i.e. I know I can't get more than 3ml. in a pipette.) If things don't turn out perfectly flavor-wise, I'm okay w/ that for now.

For VG you need larger diameter needles, try 16g. For PG try 20g. The smaller the number the larger the diameter.

The fly by the seat of your pants method is OK when first starting out but you need to be more percise with your measurments to be able to duplicate that great mix when you find it. Writing everything down with accurate measurments is vial in the DYI world.
I would recommend you do some reading and here are a few recommendations.

Read my blogs before getting started

E-Cigarette Forum - dannyv45 - Blogs

then read hoosier's blogs.

then read the stickies at the top of the page.

this will explain a lot of the how's and why's.

So clearly I'm going to have to fix this darned syringe prob. Ignorant me ... I had no idea there were different types

Danny, I bookmarked myfreedomsmokes.com and will be ordering DIY supplies from them in the future (as per your blog post on "the kit").

In the meantime, I'm going to get some water soluable tobacco and coffee flavors from TFA to try out, in an effort to at least partly replicate what I have in my other vivi (JC TN cured + a shot of JC espresso). I'm still happy w/ my brain-dead menthol, but I want to replace flavors apprentice w/ TFA (for bulk buying). So I'm working on that one, too.

Some of the stuff in the blogs is too advanced for me right now, but I've bookmarked them and will chew over them as I get more into it. I like to think of myself as a quick study, but I've only been vaping for about six weeks and am only on my third equipment setup (JoyeTech 510T *ugh* --> Kanger Protank mini II (leaked) --> vivi 3 tank). You probably won't ever catch me w/ a Provari, it's just more than I need ... besides I gotta stop spending so much on this

Some of you folks have obviously been DIY'g for years. I may never get anywhere near that far into it, for me it's still mainly a replacement for analogs . I'm much more concerned about the CASAA-type issues that are going on: legal restrictions, portrayal in the media, etc. Some of you may have seen my posts in media and legislation, that's mainly where I hang. (Those of you who are interested in what the media is saying might check my daily roundups there: you may find that your co-workers or neighbors are talking about coverage in your area. I try to track hit job studies and pieces like the latest "don't try vaping" junk that's now spreading from Consumer Reports. Things are ugly out there, and there's lots of action in state legislatures - most of which will be in session for the next few months.)

Paul, I don't have a prob w/ the bulkapothecary PG - I have a prob w/ PG, period :) Throat hit's just not for me. Actually I have a little prob w/ bulkapothecary VG because it's made in Malaysia. My next bottle is going to be organic + US- or Canada-made.

Thanks again for all the great advice ... and keep on bearing w/ me, this is gonna take some time! :D

The drug stores carry Humco VG HUMCO | Home I emailed them to see if it was food grade vegetable glycerin and they replied quickly that it is. They are in TX and sell direct. You could ask them where it is made. It is under health and beauty.
I'm going to check the PG at Tractor Supply.

Bookmarked ... thx! :)
