Thus far I've only used eGo batteries with T2, Stardust and SplitFire tanks (and a few cartomizers, but not really for me). Anyways since I've got a small amount of soldering/rewiring experience I figure it shouldn't be terribly difficult to move in to building my own wicks and coils, and it seems simple enough from what I've read so far. I am, however unsure whether I should start with a Genesis-style or Phoenix-style piece to work with. From what I understand the biggest issue with using a phoenix-style is the need for constant refills, yes? And are there any notable downsides inherent to Genesis-style attys? Thanks

So Cal
well i have only been vaping 3 months and went from cartos, which i didn't like right to RBAs Genesis. the hardest part for me was using my large hands in very tight spaces otherwise it is straightforward. i honestly can't believe why so many people encounter so many problems. i am sure many people will come along and offer much more insight and experience. for me it was the best decision. Ultra clean flavor and absolute control.
i used this company for wire.

The Phoenix is a dripping RBA. It is not designed to hold a lot of juice. However, it comes in handy if you change juices a lot or just for tasting new juices.

IMO a coil with silica (or cotton, hemp, bamboo) wick is easier to build than a coil with SS mesh wick. The SS wick has to be rolled and then oxidized for it to function properly and to avoid shorts and hot spots. On the other hand, the flavor and vapor you get from an SS wick is just awesome. Either way, make sure you check the coil resistance before you fire them.

There are some RBA's than can take either a silica wick or a SS wick. The Phoenix comes with a silica wick but it can also use a SS mesh wick (instructions here). A Vivi tank can also be converted into a Genesis style.

Here a couple of supplies for wick and wire:
