Hello everyone,

I am a newbee to the ECF and want to thank everyone for their warm receptions that I have received so far. I have been using E-Cigs since Dec 23, 2012 and really enjoy it and have not had a regular cigarette since. I just wanted to share some insight on what I have learned while using E-Cigs for this time period. By no means am I an expert on the subject but I have read a lot on this forum as well as other resourses. My background is that I am have been a dentist for over 20+ years and have my own dental practice. I really love what I do (improving peoples smiles, lives and health) and I try to get my patients to stop smoking whenever I have an chance to do so. I feel that e-cigs are a much safer alternative then smoking cigarettes and this is the way I approach this matter.

I am no smarter or dumber :) for that matter then the rest of the forum members and I want to just give some “food for thought” as you hear all the negative things about smoking which I do agree with but using E-Cigs is not smoking and very different in my opinion. E-CIGS are just a nicotine delivery system……. just the same as Nicotine Gum and Nicotine patches. It is the anti-smoking zealots (you know who they are) and the greedy politicians missing out on their tax revenues along with a few others who are creating the controversies and bad publicity around E-Cigs. They just can not accept the fact that people are now doing something that similar to smoking and it has to be BAD FOR YOU!!!!

It is just a lot of confused emotion in their beliefs that they can not handle. They are not ready to accept the fact and they may never really be able to accept the fact that we are not smoking but vaping. What else could explain why the anti-smoking people (the smoke Nazi's as I like to call them) are ok with the nicotine patch and nicotine gum but if it gives off water vapor and looks like some form of cigarette, they go hysterical about this form of nicotine use. It is just so irrational in the way that they think and they confuse rational thought and think only on their emotions and not logically. They are a hard-wired in their way of thinking and in my opinion and it is hard to convince them otherwise or even have a rational discussion with them about E-Cigs.

Good luck to all and happy vaping…….. Doc S

SOME BENEFITS IN USING E-CIGS (as a “NICOTINE” delivery system)

1-SMOKER’S PARADOX- the use of nicotine without smoking regular cigarettes may be as beneficial as smoking, without the increased risk to health due to the tar and other substances (carcinogens) found in tobacco which is mostly produced and released in the form of smoke with the combustion of tobacco products.

2- The risks of ulcerative colitis or IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) has been frequently shown to be reduced by smokers on a dose-dependent basis; the effect is eliminated if the individual stops smoking. Chrone’s Disease is a form of IBD.

3- Nicotine reduces the chance of preeclampsia (high blood pressure in pregnant women along with increased amounts of protein in the urine and atopic disorders (predispostion to develop an allergic hypersensitivity reaction )such as allergic asthma.. A plausible mechanism of action in these cases may be nicotine acting as an anti-inflammatory agent, and interfering with the inflammation-related disease process, as nicotine has vasoconstrictive effects.

4- Where tobacco smoking is associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease there is evidence that nicotine itself has the potential to prevent and treat Alzheimer's disease. Nicotine has been shown to delay the onset of Parkinson's disease in studies involving monkeys and humans.

5- Research at Duke University Medical Center found that nicotine may improve the symptoms of depression. Nicotine appears to improve ADHD symptoms (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). Some studies have focused on benefits of nicotine therapy in adults with ADHD .

6- Nicotine (in the form of chewing gum or a transdermal patch- not sure on E-cigs but why not as it is a nicotine delivery system) has been explored as an experimental treatment for OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder).

7- Nicotine appears to enhance concentration and memory due to the increase of acetylcholine. It also appears to enhance alertness due to the increases of acetylcholine and norepinephrine. Arousal (state of being awake or reactive to stimuli) is increased by the increase of norepinephrine. Pain is reduced by the increases of acetycholine and beta-endorphin. Anxiety is reduced by the increase of beta-endorphins.

This is an awesome perspective! I understand why the public believes in the patches and gums. It is because they have been led to believe this by the mainstream media and the BT/BG/BPharm companies that this is the only acceptable alternative to smoking as the idea that nicotine craving is the only withdrawal from smoking cessation. This is perpetuated by non-smokers who have no idea what they are talking about. If the gums and patches had the success rate that PV does, you can bet the farm that the backing would be different today. The reality is that there are more aspects to the "habit" that are harder to overcome. We have had our trusty friend for so long that it has become a fixture of what is our personality. Losing the identification of one's self is much harder to deal with. Our lives revolved around even the smallest aspects of smoking. Some so small that we don't even recognize them until they are not there. Then what do we do? We go back to smoking. Not only for the nicotine delivery but to get back those small quirks that give us individuality and therefore regain our self image. I believe that vaping helps us retain enough of these nuances along with the nicotine delivery that the transition seems to be almost seamless and in simple terms, works! I didn't mean to ramble but I have put serious though into why PV systems have so much success when the delivery system in its theory is the same. I apologize if I got this wrong but this is my view and understanding.

I have a bit of trouble accepting number 3.

Nicotine causes birth defects, especially neurodevelopmental abnormalities, and any pregnant woman using nicotine is risking causing severe harm to her unborn child. It can even cause miscarriages and still births. And even if you have an otherwise normal and healthy baby it will be born a nicotine addict and will begin going through withdraws within the first hour or so after birth.

So, I guess if you are so concerned about lowering the blood pressure of the mother that you're willing to risk having an addicted, deformed, or even dead baby, then sure, take nicotine while you're pregnant.
