Hello everyone,
I am a newbee to the ECF and want to thank everyone for their warm receptions that I have received so far. I have been using E-Cigs since Dec 23, 2012 and really enjoy it and have not had a regular cigarette since. I just wanted to share some insight on what I have learned while using E-Cigs for this time period. By no means am I an expert on the subject but I have read a lot on this forum as well as other resourses. My background is that I am have been a dentist for over 20+ years and have my own dental practice. I really love what I do (improving peoples smiles, lives and health) and I try to get my patients to stop smoking whenever I have an chance to do so. I feel that e-cigs are a much safer alternative then smoking cigarettes and this is the way I approach this matter.
I am no smarter or dumber
It is just a lot of confused emotion in their beliefs that they can not handle. They are not ready to accept the fact and they may never really be able to accept the fact that we are not smoking but vaping. What else could explain why the anti-smoking people (the smoke Nazi's as I like to call them) are ok with the nicotine patch and nicotine gum but if it gives off water vapor and looks like some form of cigarette, they go hysterical about this form of nicotine use. It is just so irrational in the way that they think and they confuse rational thought and think only on their emotions and not logically. They are a hard-wired in their way of thinking and in my opinion and it is hard to convince them otherwise or even have a rational discussion with them about E-Cigs.
Good luck to all and happy vaping .. Doc S
SOME BENEFITS IN USING E-CIGS (as a NICOTINE delivery system)
1-SMOKERS PARADOX- the use of nicotine without smoking regular cigarettes may be as beneficial as smoking, without the increased risk to health due to the tar and other substances (carcinogens) found in tobacco which is mostly produced and released in the form of smoke with the combustion of tobacco products.
2- The risks of ulcerative colitis or IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) has been frequently shown to be reduced by smokers on a dose-dependent basis; the effect is eliminated if the individual stops smoking. Chrones Disease is a form of IBD.
3- Nicotine reduces the chance of preeclampsia (high blood pressure in pregnant women along with increased amounts of protein in the urine and atopic disorders (predispostion to develop an allergic hypersensitivity reaction )such as allergic asthma.. A plausible mechanism of action in these cases may be nicotine acting as an anti-inflammatory agent, and interfering with the inflammation-related disease process, as nicotine has vasoconstrictive effects.
4- Where tobacco smoking is associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease there is evidence that nicotine itself has the potential to prevent and treat Alzheimer's disease. Nicotine has been shown to delay the onset of Parkinson's disease in studies involving monkeys and humans.
5- Research at Duke University Medical Center found that nicotine may improve the symptoms of depression. Nicotine appears to improve ADHD symptoms (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). Some studies have focused on benefits of nicotine therapy in adults with ADHD .
6- Nicotine (in the form of chewing gum or a transdermal patch- not sure on E-cigs but why not as it is a nicotine delivery system) has been explored as an experimental treatment for OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder).
7- Nicotine appears to enhance concentration and memory due to the increase of acetylcholine. It also appears to enhance alertness due to the increases of acetylcholine and norepinephrine. Arousal (state of being awake or reactive to stimuli) is increased by the increase of norepinephrine. Pain is reduced by the increases of acetycholine and beta-endorphin. Anxiety is reduced by the increase of beta-endorphins.
