When I first told my family that I quit smoking they were thrilled. Told them I took up vaping, the thrill is gone. These are ex smokers who suffered the cold turkey. All they can think about is when am I going to quit these? You would think this is some kind of vodoo. I try to explain but they can't see the vaper tru the smoke. I go hide just to get a vape hit. I never did that with smoking. I can't seem to win but I know the cigarette devil :evil:will not win in the end. It is my life and I still feel that I have kicked a 36 year habit in the ....! Pooey on them and hand me my ego!
Thanks for the rant!

Kimber..I run into that sort of attitude now and again. I just ignore them. It seems that ex smokers who quit cold turkey are the worst..they did it the hard way and suffered..so should YOU! LOL Oddly non smokers who never smoked are more accepting if they are the least bit open minded. My friends in my women's club are fascinated by my flavors and pretty colored batts.
just keep doing what you are doing and try to explain that it's not the bit of nic that's the killer..but the 3,999 other chemicals in a cigarette. It helps if they are eatting salso or tomato sauce at the time, you get to say "you are eatting nic right now!" (nic is found in Tomatos potatos and all types of peppers.)

Hang in there, Kimberlou! Hopefully they'll come around at some point when they realize that your better off health-wise now.

Are there any other vapers in your area... or a group close by you can get with occasionally? Might check the social groups. That may help as well. Meanwhile.... you've at least got a place to rant here.

Kimber you keep up the good work, my sis (who's a non smoker) is so very supportive,
everyone else just kind of shrugs :p But I have more fun trying to explain to people what it is and then they tell me they have someone who they'd like to have a go at something like this. You'll have to take it one step at a time, they're jealous they didn't have something like this, aren't you glad you don't have to be miserable like they are!

...but they don't have to know that.;)

some people just think you change one habit for another, i feel your pain

Not trying to start a fight here, but aren't we really taking up a new habit? Hey I for one will whole heartedly advocate taking up vaping and kicking smoking right out the door, but honestly, it seems like a habit to me.
Lets look at it like this.

You go out on the town for the evening. Later in the evening you find that you miss placed or lost your pack of smokes. What do you do? Well you stop somewhere and buy another pack. Would you just shrug and go about your business for the night and not worry about having a smoke?

Now, same situation but you get to your car and find that you left your PCC on the counter. You go back but its gone, no where to be found, no one has seen it. What do you do then? How many people would end up smoking a cigarette before the night is out? I have yet to run into the same situation myself, but I have read many posts about others experiencing and doing the same.

It is a habit, just my 2cents. But its a helluva lot better choice than the alternative that we all used to do. If you get to the point that you give up or quit vaping, great, if you don't, great too. But those who do not have the same habit will never, ever, ever understand.
I say the same habit instead of "no habit" because everyone has a habit of some sort, there is no mistaking that.

Kimberlou,

What they don't understand is you've already won. They see vaping as "still smoking" But it isn't.

Start telling them how much better you feel.

I know I can climb stairs again without being out of breath at the top. I can sleep through the night without waking up coughing myself into a migraine. My wife says that I don't wheeze in my sleep anymore and that my snoring has decreased ( not gone ) to a point where it's not keeping her awake.

On top of that, I haven't burned a hole in any clothes in over a month. That was one of the very worst things about cigs for me. God I couldnt tell you how much money was wasted to cigarette holes in clothes.

And in the end, none of that matters. All that matters is YOU are now healthier and better off. Don't ever be ashamed of that.

Absolutely! I spent this past weekend with my first PV camping at the race track. The people I know that don't smoke were thrilled about it, and when I lost my 510 in the grass at night playing with the dogs one of the workers combed the camp in the dark because he was so happy I wasn't smoking. All in all, everyone there thought it was pretty cool and a couple people actually took down website addresses to buy their own.

Then when we got home and were unloading the racecar the car owner's wife asked me what I was doing. She's a smoker and was sour about it and said "hey, whatever floats your boat. If you want to pretend to smoke cigarettes it's not my problem" hmmm  and my mother, too - it took her 23 years and countless failed attempts to quit and hasn't smoked since new years. When I told her it's healthier she literally screamed at me that it isn't healthy and wasn't supportive last week of it at all. When I got home just now, though, and told her that I hadn't had a cigarette in two days she was a little more receptive

No fight from me. You are so right, I quit a really bad habit for a not so bad habit and thats fine by me. It's all about the smoke or lack of. I would just like a "atta girl" from my family.
If I lost by pv and was having a nic fit, would I smoke a cig? Maybe, or eat it, rub it on my body. I just hope that never happens. Maybe some day we will be able to pop into the corner store and grab one and then we won't have to worry about it.

Have you ever heard any of the crap that people say to people who had lap-band/bariatric weight loss surgery? They give them a ration of crap about taking the easy way out and they didn't have to struggle to lose weight like he/she/it did. It's part of the reason self-made millionaires like Bill Gates are not as reviled as those born into family money (okay, maybe Gates wasn't the best choice, how about Jobs?).

For what it's worth, my daughter is pleased as punch that I am making the switch. As a matter of fact, she had heard about them out and was trying to think of a way of broaching the subject with me without making me feel attacked about my smoking, but I beat her to it when I mentioned my new addicting hobby/toy/salvation.

if people ask if i smoke i just say yeah, that's usually the end of it

i kinda think that many ex-smokers are in a state of eternal denial and depression because their brain still wants the nicotine and they have to suppress it, this makes them kind of flaky sometimes because you are still getting your fix and they are not.

Funny how people can be so accepting of smoking but not vaping? It is crazy and unfathomable (to me).
Agreed about the ex-smokers, especially those that followed the cold turkey route.

Right On, MaryKay, the key phrase is "..least bit open-minded..". Most cold turkey ex-smokers are not as open minded as they could (and should) be!
