The finish is to keep juice out of the wood, there isn't any chance for the finish to get into the tank. The curly maple I really like too, it gets to be quite thin in the end. The koa has a similar figure, but a bit trickier to bring out.

It has been awhile, but I skipped the parts that were rather boring to post about, namely getting all the brass ends roughly shaped. I had hoped to get the inner brass tube finished for all of them too, but only managed a few. Only so much time in a summer. :)

Here is the 18650 white ash mod very near finished, the switch is getting rebuilt from another mod as the screw did not have a retaining clip to keep the button from coming off. It is oiled and waxed and just needs a little finishing on the brass plates still:

I am a bit surprised how the grain darkened with the oiling, and the finish gets it further away from a baseball bat which I suspect is finished with a clear varnish.

Here is an 18500 wenge mod, just finished with the oiling and waxing, but it is still just the shell:

This one is like black coffee with streaks of chocolate, in the pic it is about how it looks in direct sunlight, but it lesser light conditions it is really dark. I hope to finish this one soon as I'm anxious to finally use some 18500's. :)

I got the switch finished for this one, and the 3ml genisis atty and 4050 booster pod are borrowed from my collection, so it is 'done'.

Pictured here still without the button clip:

Top and bottom removed, this is how you change the battery, yes I said 'you'

One down, and now a bunch more to finish. This one has lived in my pocket since yesterday afternoon, and I am quite liking it, I should have gotten some 18500's much sooner.

Thanks for looking!

OK, here is a mod that had a bit of trouble on both ends, but had a very curious grain on this particular cut. It is Koa and as you can see, lots of black marbling in the brown. From the stock I had one was cut this way and 3 others 'traditionally'.

After reshaping and oiling:

The finished mod:

In sunlight the grain is visible, in a lit room the sides are nearly black, notice that it stands up straight:

The ends have a shimmering amber to them, under artificial lighting also:

The upright stance comes from this:

Besides the groove in the top of the body, the grooves for the spine are cut quite a bit deeper, and their brass sleeves are a bit shorter, so there is a small copper accent at the top of each leg to match the copper on the bottom. In the event of a battery failure, the venting would likely come out the top of the mod, but would be deflected by the top brass plate. A slight compromise, but I didn't want to match the groove at the bottom of the mod. All in all I'm quite happy with it, and Koa is truly beautiful to work with. :)

Hey nico, good to see you man! I hope YOU have been doing well lately, had me worried even. I'm sure you've seen our little corner has been down since early July, maybe we can convince someone to start it up again. :)

Yeah I'm still hangin in there the best I can. I did talk to Sci the other day....he said to tell you he said "Hey". He has been really busy I guess. You will have to give me a crash course update on everything that has been happening for the past year.

Keep at it buddy!

Here is one in Curly Maple with very thin walls. It is one that inspired this very thread and was made about a year ago. This summer, while vacationing, it was my go to mod for 90% of the time. It suffered a drop from the car onto an asphalt driveway, which dinged the wood and the brass bottom, which led to a re-sanding and re-finishing as I also noticed some initial sanding marks that were too deep from a courser grit. It has been in rotation ever since, and about a week ago it has taken the foreground again with the chance finding of it working quite well with an atty I had built for a mechanincal version with a 28G 2Ω coil, something I had avoided before. The 4050 is holding up well, this particular module has a 5A PTC fuse in the circuit which I'm sure helps this situation. The current demand is high, and the batts are about done at 3.5v, which gives me about a 2ml/day of use. I'm used to taking them down to lower voltages, but, a decent tradeoff. Original pics:

The curl effect doesn't translate into pics well, but hopefully the slenderness does. :)
