Why is it that all of a sudden all these people are getting sick? For the anti vaping zealots this is something that seems to good to be true. I've been at it for 15 years and today there are 10.8 million Americans using ecigs and all of a sudden in the past week hundreds of people get sick?

I don't think vaping is the problem, WHAT they were vaping is the problem. The CDC and doctors don't seem to be interested in testing the juice to find out what they vaped that made them sick or even looking at their atomizers. I hope the industry and vaping support organizations are looking into this because it all seems a little unlikely. The history has been that some group will do a study that “proves” that vaping is bad for you and it will be all over the internet, then the study becomes widely discredited. Unfortunately I don't think this current scare is something that can go down the same way, but personally I'm not going to quit vaping and go back to smoking just yet.

I totally agree. Problem is what they’re vaping is illegal and they won’t hand over the evidence...at least that’s my thought.

that information is fractured and confused. Apparently as far as I can tell, the CDC is looking into ALL reports involving lung problems and anyone having vaped anything in any way ever. It is various incompetent media outlets that conflating it. Part of the issue is the word “vaping” doesn’t apply to just e-cigarettes any more. There’s several other three letter acronyms involved as well as idiots pouring random stuff into their attys. All of that is being put under the umbrella of “vaping”

and so far as I can tell, yes it is too good to be true.

The thing that bothers me is that the CDC doesn't seem interested in the juice. I think if it's a life threatening situation they should grant the user immunity so they can bring it in without fear of prosecution. That way the CDC can tell those of us that still use ecigs what made those people sick!

That would constitute data. Got links? As far as I can tell the CDC is being very cagey about releasing data. They’re not saying much at all about what they are looking for or why.

Yeah, it's like saying that people die from hero in overdoses because they use syringes, so lets outlaw syringes. Syringes are a perfectly fine delivery system, it's what's in it that's the problem.

The Rest of the Story: Tobacco and Alcohol News Analysis and Commentary: IN MY VIEW: CDC and Health Groups' Bias Against E-Cigarettes is Putting Kids' Lives at Risk
"The truth is that in every case so far in which a specific e-liquid has been identified, that product has been a THC-containing e-liquid, typically purchased off the street and often in open cartridges such that they could contain a contaminant or other drug. In at least some of the cases, the use of a THC oil, such as butane hash oil, has been implicated. In January of this year, there was a published case report of a severe, acute respiratory illness attributable to the use of butane hash oil. Apparently, all 21 cases in California were attributed to vaping of marijuana with all the THC e-liquids being purchased on the street."

Interesting articles. So one study says yes teens use the device for cannabis and other substances. Key word is vaping....What? Or smoking.. smoking What? It is important to distinguish the What. Unclear information leads to conjecture. Conjecture is misinformation which can lead to tragic results. The media is not educated enough to distinguish the difference. IMHO

That’s the current problem. The word “vaping” is biting ecig users because it now means a lot more than e-cigarettes, and a lot of it is really bad.

The CDC can seize what it wants, without prosecution honestly is my thought and they probably have a lot of the cartridges or whatever. They just don't want to analyze them quite yet and once they do:

It will be a tiny font in the back of a newspaper somewhere.

IDK if there are 1,300 deaths a day due to cigarettes. It's possible. But I went on a long slow journey through a bunch of CDC fact sheets preparing for my job. A ton of them are inaccurate. Severely, deficiently so. You should see some they put out on vaping ALREADY.

There are a lot, I'm not sure I'd call most of them "Scientific."

May be overly pessimistic. We don’t know what the CDC is doing. It could very well be the clown car you describe though. I get the impression the CDC is one of the few remaining more or less uncorrpted agencies though. Even the big money is too scared to wreck the CDC, unlike the FDA, and a bunch of other agencies that used to work a lot better than they do now. It deals with seriously important life-or-death things on a world wide scale that affect even rich people directly.

Do you Really think the Mainstream Media is so Uninformed?

    Or is it by Design?

I do not know when the term “vaping” has been coined with either the action of consuming nicotine or anything else. In another thread I mentioned finding reference of a commercial vaporizer for the use of vaping something other than nicotine based e-liquid dating back to year 2000. I have since found references of commercial products dating back to the mid 90’s, and references for DIY projects dating back to the late 80’s. So the action of vaping other products is not something new - although it may have gained in popularity with the growth of e-cigarettes, especially if one device is prohibited to be sold where another is easily obtainable.

They’re damaged. For many many years media worked on an oath system. They would do everything they could to print only the truth. They COULD print other things, but they chose not to. In the 80’s Murdoch came in and over 30 years managed to mostly destroy that. Then the internet came along vastly compressing the speed at which they need to work. There are still people trying to uphold journalistic integrity, but they have to fight both new methodology that ignores it, and work at three times the pace.
The non mainstream media of course never had the oath so printing lies is simply easy and profitable.

It wasn’t called “vaping” though. I’m not talking about the activity I’m talking about the term. That particular word is new. When I started I didn’t “vape” I “smoked e-cigarettes”. There was a tremendous drive to adopt the term “vaping” to differentiate it from cigarettes. I was corrected numerous times for using the second term instead of the first.

Fair enough. Like I said, I do not know when the term was coined. I can imagine when it was coined, for e-cig use, no one foresaw this level of negativity. The purpose of my post was to identify that the action of vaping for consumption, has been used with other products and for quite some time.

I would love to have faith and trust in the CDC but after going through MANY of their fact sheets, I'm sorry, I just don't.

Remember the Zombie show oh what was it called, and they FINALLY got to the CDC and like there was one guy left and a bunch of provisions and they ate up, drank up, and then the guy blew the building? I can't remember. The name of the show OR what actually happened but the CDC was a BIG FREAKING LET DOWN when they got there, let me tell you, after some initial false hope.

Believe me I'd love to have your faith and optimism about it but after reading those fact sheets it REALLY scares me that like they have the last little bit of live polio.

    A LOT.

I’m a bit confused here. So.... you’re basing your attitude on a Hollywood movie?
