Hi, I am new to vaping and am loving it so far, my only complaint is that it is making my lips and mouth hurt. Kind of like a combination if I had been not drinking any water, eating something bitter/astringent, and had a sunburn on my lips. My throat is also a bit sore. Is this common? Is it an allergic reaction or just dehydration from the vapor or something? Is it something that may go away over time as my body gets used to vaping (it does seem to be slightly better today than yesterday and I've been vaping even more today - only had one analog cigarette! which is a huge deal/accomplishment for me). Also I have a slight headache, although sometimes if I'd smoke a lot of analog cigarettes I would get one.

Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated.

I am using an E-Lites "G9 Series" cigarette-look-alike 2-piece that uses pre-filled cartridges in their regular full-strength tabacco flavour. They are 2.4% nicotine and the base is mostly PG with a tiny bit of glycerol and "tabacco flavour". I am not sure what the model number is or how to find that out?

It would be helpful to know whether these symptoms are most likely being caused by the PG or the nicotine and whether it might be alleviated by trying a different type of liquid. E-Lites only offers tabacco flavour or menthol flavour cartridges - they specialize in trying to replicate the smoking experience, which I found/find really helpful as a novice, but in future I'd like to get something that doesn't look like so much like a cigarette so I can vape in places where smoking is banned, and I'll probably try some fun flavours... For now the fact that the E-Lites look, feel and taste fairly similar to a cigarette is very helpful in tricking my brain and body ;-)

Could just be that you need to get more water but, I'm guessing PG. If that's the case, you have it worse than most. Get some all VG juice. There are vendors that specialize in it but, I'm not any help there. They are probably out there but, I don't think I've seen any all VG pre-filled cartos. So, you'll probably need to get some blank ones.

Sorry to hear about lip-mouth problem. I've been vapin about 5 months now. In the beginning, I had 2 bouts of the problem with my lips (about a month apart). They became quite red and yes, felt like they were sunburned. Unfortunately for me (and hopefully not for you), they lasted longer than a week. I tried treating them with all the lip-therapy stuff, but feel they just went away on their own. You might want to try tea tree oil, but don't swallow the stuff!

Unfortunately, now I am having a lot of cankor sores inside my mouth (and have been for the last month). Sometimes 5 at one time -- ugh! The last week or so I've gotten really aggressive with treating them and hopefully have them under control.

Good luck to you!

Suggestion for canker sores. Rinse your mouth with 50/50 milk of magnesia and benedryl liquid. I'd avoid swallowing it. :) No, I'm not crazy. :)

I'd tend to agree with try VG liquid, but I surmise from your post that you just quit smoking. Your body goes through a whole lot of crap when you put the smokes down, even if you're supplementing with nicotine. From personal experience, switching to vaping from smoking, when I was using 18mg nicquid or higher, it killed my throat. Dropping that down to 12mg (1.2%) helped a ton in my case. The first 2 weeks of vaping I had definite dryness problems - lips, mouth, throat and it felt terrible. Started making sure I always had some sort of liquid to drink close by and that problem subsided. Dehydration is a huge issue while vaping, so make sure you're getting enough water.

The headache I'm putting down to too much nicotine. Vape less, or try out a lower nicotine percentage. Keep the higher of course for when you get a bad craving.

Thanks for all your replies!

It doesn't feel like normal dehydration, so I'm thinking that vaping is drying and irritating my mouth/lips/throat. Drinking water doesn't seem to relieve it.

I don't know whether I can get other carts or blanks because I don't know how to find out the manufacturer's model number. E-Lites doesn't offer any other types except menthol, which has the same base. Does anyone know how I could find the model number? Is there, for example, a list of brand names anywhere with their model numbers? Also I am stuck with a bunch of these cartridges for now, and even if I ordered some other gear it would not arrive right away, so I think my first experiment is going to be to see if it gets better on it's own. When I first started vaping it hurt and tickled my throat and made my cough a bit, and that has rapidly improved, so I'm hoping I just need to get used to it. Nicotine gum/mints always made me choke and my throat tickle if I accidentally swallowed any of the juices, so I'm thinking that the nicotine is responsible for that problem at least.

Now I feel like I'm getting a bad cold, which is entirely possible, or it could be a reaction from not smoking or a reaction from vaping. Maybe I should try very gradually reducing my analog cigarette intake and gradually increasing my vaping? That was my original plan. I just ended up liking vaping so much and it did such a good job at reducing my cravings that I've been trying to see how long I could go without smoking.

If it doesn't improve I guess I will try lower strength nicotine and/or a different base, such as VG.

I had tons of problems like that at first. I ended up buying abreva even though it wasn't really a cold sore problem. I also used a moisterizing mouth wash and spray and drank a ton of water. I also bought drip tips and switched out the plastic caps. I am a month and a half in now, and the problems have resolved themselves.

Well that is hopeful to hear that some people had similar problems and they got better over time. I have a suspicion that I may be sensitive to the PG, so for my next e-cig purchase I am going to get one that allows me to use whatever kind of e-liquid I want so I can try different kinds and see if that alleviates the problem (plus I'd just like to have more options for flavour etc). I've been using medicated lipbalm and eating ginger candies and drinking fluids but those things only seem to help a little. I do think that the sore lips thing has improved somewhat over the past couple days though. I ended up smoking a regular cigarette which did seem to help my sore throat a bit, so maybe I will try to smoke a couple cigarettes a day and gradually taper off in order to try to make the tabacco withdrawal symptoms/ cleansing symptoms less intense.

I had the same types of problems, while still smoking, and just trying my first e-cig. Turns out that I'm sensitive to PG. I can deal with 20-30% PG. After that, it causes me discomfort.

I've seen many people report that their symptoms eased with time, to the point that it was fine. Seems odd to me, that. Some think that they may be experiencing withdrawal symptoms from smoking cessation, which also seems odd to me, for those types of symptoms...

I'd suggest getting another kit, anyway. As you said, you can get what you want that way. Anything with 510 threads will have a lot of options. The eGo styles (with the screw-on cone cover threads) have the advantage, as some cartos use those threads instead of the normal ones. Adapters can always be bought for the common styles, though.

I looked at the E-Lites site, and it's hard to say what style those may be. They kind of look like 510 threads, but I doubt it.

Straight PG makes my throat feel like a cat is clawing the back of it. I can deal with it at 80/20, but the more VG in a juice, the better it feels. Throat hit isn't a big deal to me, so I go either 100% VG or pretty close to it and just get double flavoring.

Lots of water is a must for me as well. If I don't get at least 64 ounces in, I feel so dehydrated when I wake up the next morning. Then it takes me about half the day of guzzling water to feel right again.

Also dlsw - do you think that the things you mentioned that you did were what alleviated the problems you were having, or do you think that the problems just went away with time? It is unclear to me because you said they have "resolved themselves", which to me sounded like you meant they just went away on their own...?

That's just it... I don't know if they went away by themselves or if one of the things I did helped! I think it was a combo of gettng used to it and using drip tips to keep the hot nicotine off of my mouth. VG made no difference for me. You definitely want to use a device that allows you to fill up the cartos or tank or whatever the system has. Are you sure you cannot refill? There should be a white plastic cap with a hole in the center. If there is, take an unbent paper clip, insert it into the hole and pry it out. If it comes out, you can use a drip tip instead of the plastic. DripTips for Vapor4Life 808D Electronic Cigarette Cartomizers

I had the same types of problems when I quit smoking/switched to vaping. (Sore mouth, throat, mouth/nose sores, breakouts, sinus issues.) I felt like I quit smoking then my face and body fell apart! Lol (I can laugh now because the issues resolved- but at the time it was NOT FUNNY.) If I had to redo it with 20/20 hindsight, I would have switched gradually.

IMHO, part of the problem may be the quitting smoking- your body has to do a tremendous amount of adjusting and detoxing. Also, to reinforce alot of the above opinions, h20 is helpful. I also am pretty sensitive to PG-(everytime I have REtried introducing pg juices.....I start having the same issues again. I wouldnt call it a true allergy- more like a pain-in-the-___ irritant .)

SOO... I just use VG juices....(Virgin Vapor, Alien Visions both have great ones.) If you get new equiptment be sure to get a 510 connection so you have plenty of options as far as cartos/atomizers etc...

Hope this helped and good luck to ya!

I had this too when I started. Went away on it's own after a week or two. A drip tip would have been the best short term solution for my problem, and it can't hurt to try one (they are cheap)...if it keeps up or becomes really bothersome then try varying nic strength and pg/vg mix.
In my case this only got bad when I got liquid on my lips.
