Another thought I had was that you had mentioned you were restuffing carts. I sew and craft and use alot of quilt batting and loose fiberfill. It is all treated with something. I assume it is a starch just like all new fabric is. Weather or not it is an organic starch or not, I have no idea, I do also know alot of it is produced in China. With that in mind you may want to gently handwash and dry it before you cut it up for the carts to see if there is any difference for you.
I guess we can only hope that the origional filling in our carts is a product produced without the stiffener/starch. Still alot we don't know about our new addiction/hobby.
