The fuse could *potentially* slide slightly forward, but under no condition would the + leg touch the door, or any other part. The red of the fuse is plastic so it could rest against the door all day long with out a problem (currently how mine works). And yes the paint/anodizing has to be removed under the bottom contact, if in doubt use a DMM to check connectivity and ohms.

.
From looking at this photo I don't see how it won't touch the door if it moves. Or are you talking about using the delrin insert that pdib made. Is the photo below just for a test and not a recommended method?

ltrainer, (nice avatar!). The "blue" mod is not a permanent solution. It ain't pretty. However, I'm not interested in hand shaping as many Richlite inserts as people may care to ask for. Until such time as *someone* makes a production unit available, the blue version is to show that there's a lot of ways to skin a cat. That said . . .. if bent correctly, it doesn't move. I can repeatedly tap the REO, face down, on a hard surface (door side down), shake it, etc. and the fuse does not move. IF IT WERE TO MOVE . .. . THE LEG THAT TOUCHES THE BATTERY WOULD NO LONGER TOUCH THE NEG. TERMINAL OF THE BATTERY BY THE TIME IT GOT TO THE DOOR.

If anyone tries their own mod. Please do what any good modder would do. Get to know your creation. Check it frequently, check it very frequently. don't assume that because mine works in the picture and at my house, yours will work the same. CONFIRM . . . . . . . FREQUENTLY.

Looks like a cool little fuse holder pdib, I guess it has another screw underneath. Can I see dz's initials on it ?

Does it fit in the reo, it looks to wide and deep ?

I made it.

It fits fine. I made it to fit fine. (duh, smile) It is a mini fuse. The footprint of that whole little setup is ~ 18.7mm deep X 18.9mm wide

Just to get everyone on the same page here (I hate when credit for "genius" is misplaced!): dhomes did a successful modification on his REO to reduce voltage drop. It was very effective: but required major surgery and a Venezuelan sliversmith. I did a brass shim modification on my REO that was totally simple and easy to do. Whereupon ChrisEU and SeaNap started researching fuses for modding the REO. ChrisEU has a successful fuse mod (different fuse) for his GGTS (?) and has a fuse mod (different one) in his REO as well. Perhaps he will contribute to this thread (i hope). SeaNap struck upon the idea of a mini automotive fuse for the Grand. He researched it and deemed it worthy. (i.e. a short enough reaction time paired with being able to handle the amperage we wanted to draw). I made a fuse holder, tested it. SeaNap made a different configuration without a proper holder on a full sized auto fuse and tested that. So, that's my version of the history, in a nutshell.

All my v-drop #s include two other modifications I've made to REO. One is on the firing pin. Darkzero, took the initiative to design and make a jig to facilitate making custom firing pins. He sent me a jig. He has also designed and made an effective firing pin. I borrowed his pin design and sheathed it in brass shim. The other mod was simply to remove the chrome from the contact areas of the 510 pos. post.

This is pure epicness. Dhomes, Pdib, ChrisEU and SeaNap many thanks for your dedication! You guys rock, or rather (SXD let me borrow this from ya :p) you kick some major AYUSSS. With all this info it'll be interesting to see what the modmaster decides to do for his sub-ohm kit.

I do so hope this comes to fruition.

Gah! 2 weeks gone, I come home to some brass shim in the mail from my favorite bumble bee only to find that I'm still several steps behind!

tonight (if I can stay awake) I will begin the shim mod... tomorrow (if I wake up)... Meh, who am I trying to kid? I probably won't wake up until Sunday!

Haha, yeah it's crazy how fast everything has evolved and multiple aspects defined in just 2 weeks in our spare time! You guys are a great group of people!

I would like to see how ChrisEU's PTC fuse is holding up, I think the last time he updated us he was using the 7.5A with the teflon buttons? I think for a fuse with legs like that a mount like pdibs that had side holes with the dowllel screws would work out great. I am excited to see how that is holding up because I think those types of fuses (PTC) would end up being for the GenPop because of their resettability, and they are juuust hard enough to find that people would have to go through Rob to get the correct fuse. (If *someone* does actually produce a High performance mod :p )

I started reading and watching all of the pics from work. When I got out I went straight to autozone and got me some 10 amp fuses. Got home 15 minutes ago, went straight for it. I did the method pdib posted inspired by SeaNap for those that don't have the materials. After setting it up (without the support he used on the fuse) I put the battery in, it fits tight, perfect. I was a little hesitant at first to fire it, but I went ahead and it fired! It didn't blow the fuse so that was a relief. I took my multimeter, my battery at 4.1V, on a .5 ohm coil, 3.7V. That's a .4V drop on a .5 ohm coil. Awesomeness! I don't have the firing pin modded or anything else for that matter so just with the fuse I get only a .4V drop on a .5 ohm coil. I used the same coil with the shim and the drop was .46V. All I can say is to you guys who made this possible, is thank you^infinite :p. Pics!

So, I presume the fuse is (tall) enough to allow the battery nipple to reach the firing pin without a spring pushing it upward to meet it.(?)
Yes, depending on the angle you give to the pin making contact with the mod, you can adjust it. But pretty much it sits the battery tight and with the right angle it won't wiggle or come off.

.... Yep, im doing this. Lol.

Pdib, you got a link on the firing pin mod?

What are the possible modification you can do for your REO? Dechroming connection, firing pin replacement, fuse in place of spring... That should be it right?
You forgot putting a NASA intelligent chip on the REO so that it becomes your slave and does your work for you, cooks, cleans and gives you massages.

Yeah that should be about it. Those three modifications should yield minimum voltage drop.
