just a guess, cause I don't actually know much about this stuff; but Kanthal is designed to form a layer of Aluminum Oxide on it's surface when heated: specifically to impede conductivity across/beyond the surface of the wire. As one initially glows a new coil, the Aluminum Oxide layer forms during the first couple pulses, and the coil loops won't short out against one another after that. However, if one is employing a tightly stacked, contact, micro coil, yada, then there are places where the wire is coming in contact (with the neighboring loop) tightly enough that the Oxide layer doesn't form well. Brushing after the initial pulse breaks these contact points and allows the Oxide layer to form there as well (which is, obviously, also the point where it is/was shorting out).

sorry but i

Exactly right...

I call this the placebo effect.

There is absolutely no proof and me watching all those videos has proven that it's placebo 100% sure of that
It's like someone said earlier when you have coils that are spaced out you don't need to brush them cause they are spaced out... They just work...

Same bloody thing ....

It's like talking to your pencil and believing it's talking back to you. Like Tom hanks in the movie cast away when he talks to the coconut...

You guys do it and believe it works? More power to you.

So some of us explained to you why, but you still don't believe us?

Are you one of those people who still thinks the Earth is flat?
What are you talking about there's nothing to believe there is only logic...
I appreciate the people's replies and their opinions and this is a forum for discussion as such that's what this topic is.

You need for the coils to form oxidation layers between them. Squeezing and brushing contact coils often speeds up that process.

Spaced coils don't require that because they're spaced. A couple pulses and it should be good to go.

A long time ago, I minored in physics. I admit I haven't used my education in that field as much as I would've liked, but I remember enough to get my coils glowing well quickly :)

Saying you are open to discussion, yet not willing to even accept the possibility that you might be wrong... sounds like a very christian thing. You know, "I'm right, and you are wrong, and nothing you say can convince me otherwise, but let's discuss it anyways".
Pointless.

I bet JC brushes his coils....

I guess coil voodoo has a pretty strong following.

So do the kardashians.
Popularity doesn't make it true.

I've never "brushed" a coil.
I don't have hot spots, and my coils always heat from the center out.
I do not understand the reason for doing this ritual.

There is zero science behind this.

We will have to agree to disagree.

Them why don't I have those
Problems?
Why do my coils not need brushing to fire properly?
Couple pulses and they heat perfectly every time.
The only time I ever had a hot spot was on a genesis, before I understood how to build them properly ( PetarK method).
I've never had a hot spot on any other build.

your old coil does not need brushing to fire properly because it's already oxidized.

for people making fresh contact coils, the brushing activity is really about forming the oxide layer

Honestly I can't answer that but I am sure we don't roll our coils the same and the devil is in the details as they say. I am not sure if I will get around to it (had a minor surgery yesterday) but I am going to try and make a short video of how it works when I build.
