Started vaping today, and I have a problem

Update:

Went into work today and talked to a vaping buddy. He had no problem whipping it out and taking a puff of what he called a "v2" (another cig-a-like) and saying he loved it. I quickly pointed out that his as well, reeked of fog machine. But he has no sense of it.

My wife had some wine, and as per usual, wanted a drag or 3 after a couple glasses, and I handed her my vape. She didn't agree with my fog machine perception, but thought it wasn't great, and still wanted the real deal.

So tomorrow, I'm off to the store on a taste test ! I am a huge fan of fake cherry flavor, so hopefully they have something like that, or surprise me with something else and we can get this thing going. Money is no object for the right flavor and device !

The problem is.... they ALL taste like a FOG MACHINE !

Try a NET! (What's that, you may ask?)

I'm a current (tobacco) pipe smoker who stumbled into the world of vaping trying to rescue a friend from a pack and a half a day habit.

Let me say that I never had, nor have to this day, the intention to stop enjoying a fine pipe altogether, although as weeks go by I find myself reaching for the PV instead of the pipe. (PV = personal vaporizer, there's a whola lot of lingo to learn if you want to enjoy this hobby, all of it, it seems in undescifrable acronyms)

As you were advised previously, all e-liquids are made with Vegetable Glycerin (VG) and Propilene Glycol (PG), the very same ingredients —mainly the PG– that machine fog is made from.

Buying an e-cig like yours for my friend, I tried and couldn't resist an electronic pipe (a real piece of junk, later turned out). Nevertheless, it sent me on a quest to find a replica of my favorite pipe blends, the English or Balkan style ones, made of Virginia, Turkish and Latakia. While none of the dozen liquids I've tasted, I've found many that are very pleasurable and that really give the sensation of smoking. You must understand that I quit cigarrettes more than 35 years ago and that I confine myself to a pair or three pipe bowls a day when in excess, usually that amount in a week.

The liquids that I found more satisfying are NET's, or Naturally Extracted Tobacco (liquid). You might want to give a Google search for the above terms or check this and other forums with that keywords. I find one from Want2Vape called London to most closely replicate the ancient Balkan Sobranie, if that's at all possible in an e-liquid. It cannot be done with real tobacco! Go figure.

Another that I find very good albeit a more "pharmaceutical" and not a NET, is Halo Tribeca, a very popular juice. The whole Halo line is extremely good and you might like to sample some before writing off the vaping alternative.

Last but not least, even if I truly don't recommend this as it can be not only daunting but dangerous is a DIY NET (you handle liquid nicotine which is a poison). There's a wealth of videos in You Tube and also very good tutos here in ECF should you -eventually- decide to go that way. I have successfully made pipe tobacco extracts from three of my favorites and although they dont really taste like the real thing they don't taste of PG either as I do them almost with pure glycerin.

I hope you succed. Keep at it and heed the advice of the experts here. A mechanical "mod" which will make you look like you're sucking on a flashlight :( is probably your best alternative right now. I'd suggest investing in one or at least buying one of the eGo variable voltage starter kits with a decent tank or claromizer (look up the terms). The one I'd recomment is called a T3 and a small clear tank with bottom coil like the G6 should bring out the good that any juice has to offer.

Sorry for the long winded post but vaping really helps to kick the habit. My friend cut from 30+ to 5- a day and passed the cartomizer cigarrette lookalike to another needy soul but not before investing in a good mod that keeps her puffing happy day in and day out.

Good luck!

Personally, I find that PG tastes like a fog machine. I like e-liquids that are very high on VG (although the flavor suffers a bit).

Try vaping some straight glycerine (you can get it at the drugstore) with no flavor, no nic, and see whether you get that same "fog machine" taste. If that works for you, you can build from there.

I asked the supplier on the PG / VG ratio and got no response. I'll give him another day before I am more stern or negative about it.

I would tend to agree, and heavier VG may be what I need. I have also inquired with my Chemist brother-in-law on safety, and possible taste alternatives (He actually has done extensive research on the subject of these compounds, and dozens of others)

Nothing to it legendarymorbious, vaping -but mainly cooking juices- has rapidly become a pleasurable hobby. At this very moment I'm enjoying one of mine own, a Black Cavendish concoction, with a couple of drops of Sweet Almonds Oil (the very same thing that you use for ear canal humectation, it's natural and harmless) plus a small measure of Pernod for tang. After a week of steeping it's a treat and I think in another two weeks it will blow me out of my socks! OTOH, today I received in the mail a tin of some excellent baccy (G.L. Pease Sextant) and tomorrow I'll light one f my favorite meerschaums.

In any case, the missus is extatic with my turning into vaping as the house reeked of cantina ashtrays the "morning after" when I lighted my customary late night pipe, pleasant as the aroma was while the pipe was alight.

Dump the ciggy and get yourself an eGo starter like this. I think you can easily find one online.

legendary,

«I asked the supplier on the PG / VG ratio and got no response»

No surprise there, the VG/PG ratio plus actual flavorizers are one of the most jealously guarded secrets of the trade! ;-) Better instead, tell him/her "I'm alergic to PG and want a liquid made with pure VG and flavors, no PG at all" and see if that solves the Fog-Machine taste. Then you're done. ;-)

Update:

Supplier says 3:1 PG to VG for this fog machine stuff. So, if that's what is creating that "taste" then I guess less PG is what I need.

So I went to the vape shop today, and sampled a good 50 different flavors. 95% of them tasted like soap to me, and the retailer said they are more VG based. So at least to my taste buds, swinging in the other direction is just as bad !

I did find something that wasn't soapy, and tasted like passion fruit (not similar to, exactly tasted like), with no fog machine or soap flavor. So I got a bottle of "Lychee" - by Thera Vape (16mg/mL) and it's a big improvement.

Now I just need to find out what they are doing different, so I can follow that lead. They don't have enough varieties right now to keep me satisfied. The watermelon was also good, and latte was decent, but too strong for me.

Legendary,

You might need to do what I ended up doing: cook your own juices. It's not that difficult really if you can read (and relate to) percentages, milliliters and can handle a pair of graduated tubes, a pair of syringes and a MW oven. I'll not give here any kind of advice on that other that I've came out with a few concoctions I really like and taste natural, ranging from real tobacco to coccoa, almonds and/or mint.

OTOH, you might want to taste pure vegetal glycerin first, without any additives on it and see if, however disagreeable, solve your fog-machine and soapy taste issues. If that doesn't, then you are in a big feud with vaping.

However, if this sorta handles the problem, then you can start making your own juice easily. Just drop me a note and I'll guide you through it with HD photos and some recipies.

Good luck & best regards!

Jorge.
