I can and do vape at my desk now and then. The people that work in my area know what it is and don't mind. But I still go out to the smoking area on a regular basis. The smokers in the building where I work are a great bunch. I have converted one of them and a couple more will probably give vaping a try soon. The more people that start vaping, the more it will go main stream. Do it around the smokers, they are the target audience.

On the other hand, I have yet to vape openly in a restaurant or bar, nor have I ever seen anyone else do it. I still step outside with the smokers. I hope it will change in the bars, a smart barkeep would sell the disposable units.

If I was in a bar or other establishment geared toward adults, I would vape (so long as city or county ordinances did not prohibit vaping). In family places (like the grocery store, for example) or at the dentist's office or doctor's I won't. I do this out of respect, and because I don't want to cause a stir. I have no problems vaping in the house in front of relatives when they visit, especially those who smoke.

Same here. I vape in bars or other places that have a mostly adult populace. I don't feel the need to vape in the grocery store and have children asking their parents what that weird man is smoking. I don't want to promote this stuff to the youngins. I also agree that we shouldn't stealth vape as it makes it seem as we are doing something wrong by trying to hide it, I feel people will think I'm doing some sort of drug if they see me acting paranoid taking steath hits at Home Depot. However I also don't feel like we should act like we rule the world and make everyone uncomfortable. If you need nicotine all the time put in a Snus if you're around kids or in a more family type setting.

Usually when asked about it it's either a smoker who is intrigued and wants to try it or get more info or it's some die hard non-smoker who will give you a bunch of crap about what the second hand smoke has in it. After explaining all the benefits to some non-smoker (doesn't give you cancer, pretty much just water vapor, got me off analogs, etc...) she still couldn't wrap her head around the fact that it wasn't tobacco. Kept saying "if there is nicotine in it how can there be no tobacco in it and how can the second hand smoke not contain carcinogens." She had it so ingrained in her head that nicotine was what caused the carcinogens in cigarettes that it was nearly pointless trying to explain it to her. In the end she said she didn't care as long as she wouldn't be harmed by it and had the nerve to tell me I should do more research on them. It can be annoying when the crazy non-smoker lady catches you...

I still follow the "no smoking" rules where ever I go. I don't want to give the E-cig a bad wrap.

To me, that sends the opposite message. It tells others what you are doing is harmful to them so you go elsewhere, when it's not. To each their own though. I vape at my desk at work. Employees at my office know what they are. It's also been FREEZING here so I don't want to go outside. The facts, as we currently know them, have been presented to those who have asked. I am not "in your face" about it, but I certainly don't try to hide what I am doing. I don't take super huge drags to try to generate an enormous cloud of vaper and I don't chain-vape. Most are just happy I quit smoking and that I am not coming back from outside smelling like an ashtray.

OK- here is a really strange one for you all!

This is my dilemma- I guess I am sooo programed NOT to smoke in certain places I still feel REALLY uncomfortable vaping in those places! I feel like if I pull it out and vape someone is going to be screaming at me or kicking me out!

How many of you have experienced this? And what do you do?

Do you just say eh- eff it and start vaping and wait for someone to say something or ask questions?

I'm interested in hearing about your deprogramming experiences :)

I'm pretty much like you. If smoking is not allowed, I don't vape. That irritates the hell out of me tho,, causes its not really smoking. And in the small town I live in, not many have even heard of vaping, so they would certainly freak out in Walmart if they saw me puffling on something and a large cloud of vapor comes out of my mouth.

I use my mind, and evaluate each situation independently.

Not all places and situations call for the same behavior.

I would say I tend to err on the side of not ruffling feathers, and often do not vape where I cannot smoke, but some situations either feel comfortable or I feel comfortable asking. Some, I don't. That's all there is to it.

For me, it depends on where it is. Not all no smoking areas are created equal. If i'm at a nice restaurant, I'll keep my pv in the car, no need to cause any problems. If i'm at a theme park, which only has designated no smoking areas, I have no problem taking a few puffs while walking around in the other outside areas. My house is a no smoking area, but i'll vape all day long in there.

This is currently a never-ending discussion.
At least it will be never-ending until the rest of the world catches up with us.

You will get those who say that it is your duty to vape openly and proudly, anywhere and everywhere.
And you will get those who say it is your duty to stealth vape where smoking is frowned upon.

Because, yes, we need to educate and overcome.
And yes, we need to not anger and turn against us those who we NEED on our side.

Both are right, and both are just as wrong.
So do what you think feels right.

Over the last two years, I have been in many situations where I was dubious about whether to vape or not. In most cases, I play it by ear, try to be courteous to others, yet informative when given the opportunity.

One surprising episode involved my husband and I attending a big annual Cancer Society fund raiser here. I was concerned that in that environment, even vaping would be unacceptable. Alas, was I ever wrong. The event is held in an outdoor setting in the summer, but with air conditioned tents for auctions and the casino tent. I had stepped outside to vape a little and ran into a client of mine, an oncologist (transcription service). He was so intrigued and ask me to demo to his other staff who were there. Suddenly I found myself in the ambassador mode. Very good feedback and they encouraged me to vape at the card tables, in the tents, anywhere... which led to more demos but I was happy to do it in that situation, "for the cause" so to speak.

Other situations that have been interesting are outside the hospital, in the airport and various other public places. I don't force the issue, but I do expose others to the information and usually, done in the right way, it's a good thing.

Of course, I must add that here in the south, we are fairly gregarious in public and approaching total strangers is not an unusual thing here. I have even stood outside with smokers before going in a store, and introduced them to vaping.

I avoid the e-cig terminology as much as possible, using vaping and Personal Vaporizer when explaining, therefore avoiding the inate negativity the word "cigarette" inspires.

We are all adults (hopefully) and most if not all of us have a pretty good instinct about our immediate enviroment and how accepting others will be.

Vape on Vapers ! And keep those cards handy at all times !

I will say, though, that I vape in the house anytime.
And I vape in the open public air anytime.

I have vaped openly in the following places after asking the appropriate people...
--Tilted Kilt bar
--Padres game

I have vaped openly in the following places without asking...
--American Idol concert at the San Diego Sports Arena
--In the outdoors seating area of many restaurants
--In public parks
--At the beach

I have stealth vaped in the following places...
--In an airport
--On an airplane
--Inside a restaurant
--Inside a movie thearter
--Inside a playhouse
--Inside a Walmart
