Just putting that there for people who find denture talk ah, problematic, though I can't see why.
I'm in the middle of some pretty extensive oral surgery which involves the use of denture implants to stabilize my jaw, as after 10 years of using denture adhesive and chewing? Well, your jaw breaks down over time, and I also desire to stabilize my jaw and have, you know, the ability to chew until I die (I guess, now I'm not smoking I have to push that date out, some). I've had 8 implants put in and some bone shaving, and yesterday I went for my final follow up and 2 of my implants had failed, which isn't unusual...
What is unusual (and I can't mention my oral surgeon's name, he asked me not to tell anyone about him, LOL) is that my oral surgeon, who may be one of the nicest men on earth, is going to replace 2, possibly 3 implants *for free* as I have no dental insurance (and when you're paying 11K for stuff, dental insurance doesn't help much anyway). I was shocked, I mean, I signed paperwork indicating that I knew that on average, 1 out of 6 implants *will fail* and that's just the luck of the draw. But, my peroidontist was super happy I quit smoking, says my mouth is much healthier, etc. and refused to accept my *suggestion* that he not do the top implant as he said at the time he was iffy about it, and it might fail, but I'd be ok with three, he just ah, VOLUNTEERED. I think he feels bad due to my age, and I also asked him what appeared (to him) to be the funniest post impant question he had ever recieved, which I cannot mention here due to the rules of the site... I will merely mention my oral surgeon's response which was, "Yes! Yes, you can and MUST do that for your husband, it will keep him young!" (Amidst choking on laughter, I guess I could've googled, heh.)
So, first of all, I was happy/sad because I'm heartily sick of this mess, also in recovery and DO NOT use sedation OR anything but advil in the week(s) that follow. Being awake for like 2 hours of dental surgery sucks, for those who wonder. It was better than 24 teeth removal, that's for sure, but it isn't FUN. Implants HURT. That said, my adorable oral surgeon is going to be doing about 8K more work for free, as he also wants to add another implant elsewhere so things will be symetrical (which is best for dentures) and will have to remove the other implants that have failed. THIS TIME I will have to do BOTH my upper and lower jaw at the same time and the appointment will be 3 HOURS long, probably.
EVEN hearing the news of all this, though I was happy/sad/indebted, I did NOT stop for cigarettes!! I thought about it... I just vaped! Really, I think my teeth were so bad due to having braces for 6 years, (every new country was a new orthodontist, and they all had to "start over" so they said.) To be fair, I'm sure smoking didn't HELP but mainly it was a prescription med I have to take. So. EMOTIONAL TURMOIL DISMAY and I did not SMOKE! YAYAYAYA! That's like, my biggest trigger. It helped that my mouth is so much healthier and obviously, I need to keep it that way for my upcoming torture/newfound ability to chew steak.
Here's the question. My oral surgeon said it was okay to smoke with my dentures in, to protect everything, which I didn't do much of, mainly due to being in bed, mostly. Though, my problem is with the implants it's really hard to keep those dentures in, and it's best to do nothing, honestly, that causes suction in your mouth? When I had 24 extractions on ADVIL alone, my engineer husband rigged me up a smoking *drill*-- he put some attachment on it so that the drill spinning shot cigarette smoke into my nose, and down my throat, and that turned out rather well. Being on ADVIL ONLY makes it really hard to, ah, deal with the pain, but I was not about to get dry sockets, either.
Now, I can use my e-cig with my nose by inhaling straight down my throat, then out my nose. I practiced, going home. It's really rather easy.... Since one of the main things that is bad is suction, that's why I'm thinking that method? I can avoid getting vape in my mouth completely, more or less. Any risks anyone can think of doing that in the short term? I can't think of any, but I thought I'd ask..... Some more experienced folks on here? I can certainly check with my oral surgeon, he'll probably just tell me to put my dentures in but I think one of those implants may have failed due to the dentures rubbing on it, so I'm hoping to avoid that outcome again?
Thanks to ANYONE who a) read or b) can offer up some speculation? I mean if I can blow vape out my nose, I can't imagine it will be harmful, I'm just so incredibly sick of oral surgeries while awake and with no pain meds afterwards, this really has to be the last time for me (had two surgeries in 6 months, sigh). I was SO excited about getting my implants hooked up to my dentures (they have to sit in your jaw for 4 months to ensure they're bonded, sigh)...
Thanks all
Let's call this vapemiracle #2, and the free oral surgery isn't a bad outcome, either.
