I made my 5v box mod from madvapes last night and stupidly used superglue to secure the 510 connector. When one tried it the first time I got a nasty glue taste. So I tried scrapping all the glue off and got most of it. I still get the smell and taste after it sat overnight. Will the smell go away after letting it sit longer? Did I ruin this mod and new to build a new one?

I can tell that 5v is just what my cartos ordered but I can't vape on it!

Don't use it, I think if you clean it with finger nail polish remover (NOT the non-acetone kind) and then wipe with damp cloth well, and then clean with 90% isopropyl alcohol and dry completely then maybe it can be saved...

But DON'T vape it if there's even a chance that you are inhaling super glue, it aerates and sticks to everything it touches like a film afaik.

This is just my opinion (gleaned from watching those crime shows where they can get finger prints to come up with super glue smoke. LOL!)

I strongly suggest that you stop using that mod immediately! Super glue can release poisonous gases and can become volatile when heated at high temperatures.

Agreed! What is happening is, the battery connector heats from the atty, then produces the gas, you draw from your atty and the air you draw in is coming from around the base of the atty where those glue gases are forming. Best to start over and use an epoxy.

Super Glue/Cyanoacrylate glues are not something you want to inhale vapors from. The Wikipedia entry seems to say it's an irritant only, but just the nasty smell would make me not use it.

I build RC models, and when I am rebuilding a piece and there's CA on metal, I'll clean it by heating the metal part with a torch, but I definitely stay out of the smoke, it makes my eyes water. I can't imagine what it'd taste like...

From wiki, this is reassuring (still wouldn't use it though, IMO):

QUOTE:
"The fumes from CA are a vaporized form of the cyanoacrylate monomer that irritate sensitive membranes in the eyes, nose and throat. They are immediately polymerized by the moisture in the membranes and become inert. These risks can be minimized by using CA in well ventilated areas. About 5% of the population can become sensitized to CA fumes after repeated exposure, resulting in flu-like symptoms.[15] It may also act as a skin irritant and may cause an allergic skin reaction. The ACGIH assign a Threshold Limit Value exposure limit of 200 parts per billion. On rare occasions, inhalation may trigger asthma. There is no singular measurement of toxicity for all cyanoacrylate adhesives as there is a wide variety of adhesives that contain various cyanoacrylate formulations."

There isn't a cure time that will make it safe to use when it's heated. That's why I suggested that you stop using that mod.

ahh i see. ya i think ill set this one aside and build my puck mod today. Ill try to salvage the 5v one a little bit later. Maybe get a new batt box and a new 510 connector. that should be all that needs replacing

This is just me, but I wouldn't bother trying to save it. My fiance and I build miniatures for Warhammer 40K and work with super glue a lot. It gets into every single crevasse it can find and is nearly impossible to remove. If we have to tear apart a model we have let them soak in oven cleaner and that doesn't even take all of it off. Acetone might work, but then you run into more problems because acetone leaves a residue that you definitely don't want to inhale.

It's a mod. You made it. Pull the atty connector and put a new one on. You can get one from a dead battery if you don't have an extra. This time, use jbweld or other epoxy. Although acetone will remove the glue, it will probably melt the plastic too. Just replace the connector.

If you absolutely must salvage the connector, and can get it out, then take it outside and soak it in acetone or nail polish remover, wash it off well. Flux solder it back on. Vape away. Have fun.

Vaping uncured super glue is quite dangerous, the cyanide released will take your breath away and make it impossible to breathe. Vaping the fumes from cured super glue is less pronounced but still inadvisable. There are super glue removers available that do the job quite well, other chemicals have little effect at removing the glue after it has set. Some auto parts stores and hobby shops sell the remover.

Cyanide was previously used as a method of execution in the USA.
