I love it!
And if I ever went to a vendor's homepage and found "for news, check our Facebook page" - well, that would be the very last time I would visit their page. Let alone buy anything from them. Leading a customer (who intends to spend his money) on a wild goose chase is - to my mind - extremely arrogant, extremely rude and not good for business. Try this in Germany and you can close your shop. Word travels fast. And German customers do not like arrogant BS.

I do have a FB and have gone to one vendors FB to make a purchase only because he didn't have the typical online store but when I'm on a vendors site and I see "like us on FB to receive......I don't care what it is- I close that tab and find someone else.
In the 3 months I've been vaping I've entered 2 contest and both required also posting on FB. For me, it felt like overkill so I simply stopped entering contest.

I think it's all been said, but here we go:
1 - nothing wrong with a vendor offering a contest partly with the objective of building their social networking presence
but
2 - nothing wrong with some of us trying to let them know that we PREFER an option of participating WITHOUT F-book

I fall into that category. I like contests, I like ECF, I am often exposed to a new vendor through a contest - and I WILL NOT participate in anything that requires Facebook

If a vendor wants to use FB for communicating whatever they wish, then that is their prerogative. If I find a vendor I like and they have a FB page, I will like their page, and then I can follow them if they post up something. However, I am not into chasing a vendor's forum or thread here and usually just happen to check ECF once a day over a coffee for new posts or additions to threads I participate in. As far as FB, I use it to follow my kids and they me. It actually brings us together sometimes, as we are spread out across the country, and strikes up more communication then relying solely on the telephone. If you don't want to follow a vendor via FB, fine, their loss, but it is also their choice to make, and I would suggest direct feedback to those vendors, because they probably do not read nor have time for threads like this. As far as vendors linking to offsite from ECF for contests etc, it is against the rules here, so they are not allowed to do it. I am sure the mods may find vendors practicing this and put a stop to it, and the minions will surely point it out to the mods if it is missed. I would say they want the exposure here, and pay for that, but also want exposure outside of ECF. Plus the rules here may/may not hinder what they want to do.

Not too long ago a vendor had their FB page shut down because of ecigs (can anyone say 'PayPal'??)... which really made them mad because they had already spent a lot of money advertising on there. They ended up starting another page with just vague references to vaping...

With the influx of ecig related pages now, I guess FB doesn't care where the $$ comes from anymore... Ha!!

Guess I'm too cynical to get all exited about a marketing campaign funded by dangling a $10-200 carrot e-cig in front of a bunch of people on Facebook.

So am I. And I would not bother with that.
However, it is against the rules of this forum. And I will most certainly report one of those links if I see it.
Being from Europe myself, I am kind of wary of Facebook. I have an account, but I most certainly do not tell Facebook (a big huge multinational data-mining company) anything about me. They keep asking about my place of residence. Well, it is none of their flipping business :p

Actually only a direct link to Facebook is against the site rules, linking to your registered site which then refers you to FB would not be.

We're talking about contests in this thread, not the advantages of vendors advertising on Facebook. Facebook/ECF contests, or Facebook only contests alienate a large group of potential customers. Giving FB users an extra chance at winning only pisses people off.

There's nothing wrong with vendors 'outing' themselves on as many venues as possible to get their name out there, but I think they're losing out on the opportunity to build their customer base with non FB users. There's a lot more of us than you think.

I have a FB page too, but only to keep up with certain people.
I visit it only once or twice a month, if that.
I don't have any personal info on there (not even my location either).
I got it locked down as tight as I possibly can have it locked down.
There have been plenty of times that I have thought of just getting rid of it.

I won't go to a FB page for vendor info/contests, etc.
If they don't have a standalone website they won't see me.

I hear what you're saying but also while they're "outing" themselves they're also filling up my feed with some of the same stuff they post over & over throughout the day. I don't need or want to see the same pic uploaded 29x's because that vendor on FB is trying to promote sales. When that happens, I unlike and move on.

I think the other side of the coin is while some of us don't want to enter contest here & on FB, there are people on FB who aren't even part of this forum. I think it's a stretch to think everyone with an ecig is here on ECF.

So as with anything, this can be looked at both ways.

Somewhere
When faced with the choice of having to go to Facebook for any reason...
Or finding a different vendor to provide what I'm looking for...

The other vendor wins instantly.

Why is that? What is so terrible about Facebook?

I don't understand the ranting about Facebook by some people.

More than a billion people are ACTIVE Facebook users. If some old fuddy duddies or paranoid peeps, or privacy challenged people dont want to be on Facebook, then they shouldn't. Or - if people just don't like it for whatever reason and don't want to use it, that is their choice too. Ignore the competitions on Facebook if you want. No one is forcing you. But Facebook is here to stay regardless if we love or hate it. This is how people interact with each other in this day and age. A lot of people I know, don't even use emails for private use anymore, everything is done with FB chat or other social media.

This whole thing kind of reminds me of when cell phones became popular. There were plenty of people who swore never to get one, same with emails before that. Well, what do you know? All those people have email now and all carry smart phones lol.

P.S. Facebook is an excellent way for vendors to advertise and they would be stupid not to utilise it IMHO.

I think it's due to the targeted advertising based on your interests, people like me don't mind being inundated by ecig adverts whereas old fuddy duddies dislike the endless adverts about incontinence pants.

Actually...no...

Contests are to be in-house on ECF.

They are not to be redirected to a contest on their website or other sites - just checked with the Supplier Admin :)

This thread is not about Facebook itself.

For consistency sake, you should make sure all the Mods know of this rule. There was a post in the contest thread last week that went directly to an offsite contest (not ecf thread about it), and this was loxmythe's response:

The pif group is here to help our members. If they have an opportunity to win an offsite contest it's fine - as long as it's legitimate ecig related group or vendor. There's been plenty posted that link to Facebook, Twitter etc.
