I have a 32 gb HP Touchpad that I got for $149 when they were on fire sale pricing a few months ago. Hacked android onto it and now it boots into either Android or HP's WebOS. I think it, like all tablets, is a neat little toy and nothing more. And there isn't a chance in hell that I'd spend $300, $400, $500 or more on one by any manufacturer.
The Kindle/Nook branch of the tablet tree is priced much more reasonably but of course you can't do as much as you can on a "full featured" tablet.
Steve Jobs said during the release of the original iPad that such a
device needed to do things better than both a smartphone and a laptop. In my experience it (and tablets in general) falls short on both counts. Not as functional as a laptop but cooler. Somewhat more functional than a smartphone but, among other drawbacks, it is larger and...isn't a phone
Tablets are becoming more useful but at this point I simply don't see the value in them. I use an Android smartphone for almost everything that doesn't require a real computer.
Full disclosure: I'm an I.T. manager/Sys admin and deal with Windows, Mac, Android, and Linux devices daily so feel free to take my views as either hopelessly jaded, too specialized, or both
