that's going to become an ongoing problem when there are no distinguishing marks between original and clone - unless somebody is very familiar with the workmanship .....................

The authentic Taifun GT was designed and manufactured in Germany, and is patented in the UK. I believe the company name is Taifun as there is a Taifun GS as well as the GT.
I have a contact in Poland that talks to the Taifun owner regularly. I will contact him and have him verify with Taifun, but I can almost guarantee that no authentic Taifun GT has ever had a two piece top cap/chimney tube.
Here are the differences that I have noticed between the authentic and counterfeits.
- clear plastic half tank on clone, the authentic TGT has a slightly matte finish.
- knurling on clone courser than the authentic TGT
- two piece top cap/chimney tube on clone (to be verified)
- if you press the base apart you will find the clone uses two delrin insulator disks, where the authentic TGT uses a single silicone insulator.

hmm.. so my friend's taifun is not original then.. quite shocked if not.. cos bought it at very famous trustable seller..

I wouldn't recommend doing so but I just pulled 510 screw/pin/insulator and found a punch that fit snug and found a solid hollow surface to drive out the center deck.
I got curious to check out the insides of the FT TGT.....(I don't see a need to do this.....just mainly FYI)
That is weird, my authentic Taifun GT doesn't have that line. From the pic it almost just looks like just a line. Does the tube separate from the cap?

Neither of mine have that line.
There are 2 versions of the TGT clone out there...one the gift box came with the Registered R and spare kits and the other came wihtout any Registered R marking on the box and without any spare kit. The one came without any spare kit is beleiveds to have chrome plated brass on the base deck while the other is SS.
Ok just heard back from my contact who talked to the manufacturer in Germany. The authentic Taifun GT top cap and tube is machined from a solid piece of SS. He said the photo on smoker store is just the way the picture turned out, but also said that it will be updated to eliminate confusion.
So I'm not sure that clears things up for "the friend".

1) $5.00 gift certificate discount compensation to keep it as it is
2) Get a stainless steel version deck for free

In other news....Soon Smokersstore will release the Taifun GT XS tank. Its a small version of the original. The basic difference is that the tank and top cap is shorter by 1 cm. The guy in the below video had it custom made for him, but Taifun will be making and releasing XS tank kit in the future. I don't know capacity/ETA/price/etc, just that it's coming.
