Hi Fatcharlie,
I have recently experienced similar problems. I am not positive that I have pinpointed the cause of my own disappointing issues, but I can relay what I suspect. After using both top and bottom filled clearomizers for about a week, (because they looked good on my girlie batteries) my throat was also burning, and I soon suspected (from the occasional detectable droplets), that the liquid may not have been atomizing properly. ( I also tried every one of the suggested adjustments and cleaning suggestions I could find, short of re-wicking, (since I am hesitant to start playing with that). The flavor also became disgusting in all 3 of my atomizers. This was all on the same day, while I was at work. (one chemically, one like cotton filler, one like motor oil?) Fortunately, I still had my ego c with me...but for some reason, after the clearomizer revolt, I could taste NOTHING on the ego. The smell of my liquid became nauseating..even when still in the bottle.
I was tempted to buy a pack of cigarettes...so frustrating. put new heads in my c...brushed with baking soda, drank more water, tried pickles, tried salt..the only thing fairly acceptable became a bottle of green apple I stashed away months ago. Finally after two days, my normal menthol liquid became tolerable (not revolting), but still had little flavor.
On the third day after the atty revolt, I my concept of flavor was back to normal, back to loving my ego-c.
So, planing never to use anything other than my tank system, I pulled apart the clearo atomizer heads. I had not realized when I bought them, that the coil is wrapped around the wick. When I took a new atty head, rinsed it and placed a few drops of liquid on the clean wick...it was the same smell I had developed the aversion to. There is so much wick in the clearomisers I was using...that I was picking up the "flavor" of the wick. When I first started 3 years ago, I nearly quit because I could always taste the filler of a cartridge...so I dipped a m401 till I got my ego t nearly a year ago.
It seems that the wicking material used in the clearomizer is the same as the small wick in the ego tank system...just a very small amount, but that has been fine for me, as long as I do not try to burn the crud off the wick when I clean it.
long story..sorry..conclusion for me..not to use anything with a good amount of wicking material, The burning of the wicking material can affect or eliminate my sense of taste for several days...it will go back to normal eventually
I have no scientific explanation of my sudden aversion to my liquid of the lack of flavor that persisted after.
We are all different, so I do not know If my experience will help you or not..good luck..keep trying
