Before I get to my problem I want to state that I have been a cigar smoker for many years. The Halo Triton got me off them right away! I smoked about 5 cigars a day and that's pretty expensive even with cheap cigars.

As I am a new vaper (about 6 weeks) I want to thank a number of posters on this board for the following ideas and suggestions.
1. I finally learned how to dry vape. This has really extended the life of my coils. I'm glad I don't have to remove the wick from the coil. See next.
2. I tried a couple times to remove the coil wick and they just won't come out for me. I ruined one coil by pulling to hard.
3. Excellent idea on saving the parts from damaged coil assemblies. I dropped the small top part of a coil assembly and still can't find it. Fortunately I still had another one. See above.
4. One post told me to make sure I didn't over-tighten the tank on to the battery. She was 100% right on this.
5. For some reason the coil assembly sometimes comes loose from the tank. If I have trouble drawing, I first check if the coil assembly is snug, not tight.
6. Great post on rebuilding a coil. However, I am a klutz when it comes to handling tiny objects so I'll pass on that and just by another assembly. The poster read 1.6 ohms on his new coil. Wouldn't that cause the battery to be drained much quicker?

7. My own two cents: As an ex-cigar smoker, I like a cigar with a hint of chocolate like an expensive Maduro. I found mixing Longhorn with few drops of Cafe Mocha really comes close to that.

Now a question. I have a tank that just doesn't work. I removed the old coil assembly and installed a new one. Nothing. I thought it was a bad new coil assembly but it worked in another tank. Again I got nothing from another coil assembly and still nothing. Can anybody tell me if this happens often? I would have thought this is one part of the Triton that would last forever. What caused that?

Again I want to thank all you "veteran" posters for your input. They really help us new guys.

Hi, and welcome!!!

The tank has one wire that goes from the bottom button to the center connector, the positive lead. The negative is carried through the sides of the chimney. It's possible that the center wire is somehow not making contact. You can get a cheap multitester at Harbor frieght for under $7 that will check continuity, ohms, voltage, etc.

You can wiggling the bottom button on the tank with a screwdriver. Don't twist it around, just a little. It might start making contact. The one tank I autopsied had the center wire soldered to both ends.

And if it is dead, you can use it to test non-Halo juices that you think might crack a tank.

Yes it will make the battery drain that much quicker, but you will get a hotter vape, more "clouds", and in theory more flavor. I suspect though that the amp draw on the battery for such, is pretty close to unsafe, but that is just a hunch.

What the others say is most likely the problem, but I have to ask, cause you didnt mention it. Did you try the "dead" tank on other batteries? and other tanks on that battery?

I *think* maybe he meant a dry burn? But I too want more info on why the wick was being removed from the coil?

Yes I meant dry burn. As for the wick removal, there were a couple of posts, probably about rewicking, that mentioned removing the coil wick. I tried this and ended up ruining one coil. Now I haven't tried soaking in cheap vodka. Since we don't drink much the only thing I have is a fine Merlot and I don't think that will work.

I decided just go with replacing a coil assembly if cleaning and dry burning doesn't work. Besides, with my eyesight and big fingers I doubt I could pull a wick through that tiny coil.

Yes, removing the coil wick is for rebuilding or trying to rewick, but its a bit tough to do. For normal cleaning, you don't need to remove it. I clean my coils in plain old hot water and let it soak for about 15 minutes, then drain sink and fill with hot water again and soak for another 15 mins. I gently squeeze the wicks and swirl them around in the hot water (I use a pasta strainer and but all my stuff in it to clean-tanks, caps and coils-so i just swirl that in the water.)

then I rinse them all with cold water at the end and lay them all on paper towels to dry.

Sometimes I will use distilled water but honestly, I've never tasted the difference. I know when the coils need replaced and both top and bottom wicks, when the dark mark in the middle will not clean. If the loose flavor wick looks torched or brown in the center even after cleaning, then I know the one in the coil will be bad too_Or if I just get funky tastes from them after cleaning and when vaping.

I bet most people never will, only if you have water supply that is heavily based on well water do I think you would have a problem.

I have heavy mineralization in my water most times of year, because we are mostly well water, and it isnt the flavor it is the efficiency of the wicks that is a problem. It seems that the wicks will capture and hold onto some of the calcium in the water.

Dry burn. :) Just make sure you rinse the gunk off after dry burning. ;)

2. I tried a couple times to remove the coil wick and they just won't come out for me. I ruined one coil by pulling to hard.

I've never removed the coil wick but I have taken each end in my fingers and twisted to make it tighter/smaller so I could slide it over in the coil so I could scratch or like 69sHer showed me to torch it but be careful not to burn the plastic grommet. :) I have also changed the top flavor wick which is easy because it just sits on top of the coil wick. :)

3. Excellent idea on saving the parts from damaged coil assemblies. I dropped the small top part of a coil assembly and still can't find it. Fortunately I still had another one. See above.

Great minds think alike, we all need spare parts.

4. One post told me to make sure I didn't over-tighten the tank on to the battery. She was 100% right on this.

Also if you don't over tighten it lets more air get to the coil when vaping and it doesn't seem to carmelized the juice as bad for me. :)

5. For some reason the coil assembly sometimes comes loose from the tank. If I have trouble drawing, I first check if the coil assembly is snug, not tight.

The condom on top of the coil where the lid screws on keeps juice from leaking out the mouth piece, if you ever refill always make sure the coil is tight, the act of removing the tip wiil and does loosen the coil. :D

6. Great post on rebuilding a coil. However, I am a klutz when it comes to handling tiny objects so I'll pass on that and just by another assembly. The poster read 1.6 ohms on his new coil. Wouldn't that cause the battery to be drained much quicker?

I know he did a great job with his instructions and pictures and that will be awesome that we can rebuild these wonderful Triton coils if the FDA shuts down vaping but for the time being I'll just pop on a new coil. And yes the lower the ohms the faster the battery will drain. Some people like a warmer vape so they like the lower ohm coils.

7. My own two cents: As an ex-cigar smoker, I like a cigar with a hint of chocolate like an expensive Maduro. I found mixing Longhorn with few drops of Cafe Mocha really comes close to that.

Isn't it great the variety Halo offers in Tobacco flavors. I'm a Tribeca, Menthol seX, Mystic, Kringle's Curse, Menthol Ice, Sub-Zero and Coolmist kinda girl. ;)

I've had one tank that had a leak but other than that I've never had a tank that had a short in it like yours but I've read here where that has happened but not often.

I answered all in BOLD above. And congratulations on quitting smoking.

I had the same issue in a tank before. It turns out I tried to use it before it was completely dry after washing it. I let it sit overnight and it worked the next day.

Apparently the tank is OK. I emptied out the liquid, put in a new coil, put the liquid back, and it fired right up. The tank was wet when I originally used it. So you were right! When I have another tank available, I'll test the coil assembly.

Gotta love Halo Batteries with the built in short protection, for your safety! If it detects too low of a resistance (a short), it flashes 3 times.

You might be able to salvage the coil. Take the little top cap off and the loose flavor wick, and see if the coils are touching the sides. They shouldn't. See Joe13's excellent thread on rebuilding to see some good pics. You could carefully use tweesers to nudge the coil away from the chimney sides.

And if it still don't work, save the little top cap. These get lost faster than 20 dollar bills in a strip joint.
