So I attempted to clone one of my favorite apple/orange commercial liquids and I got the base notes down, but it was missing the really tart punchy flavor. I used CAP Juicy Lemon in it, as well as Lemon/Lime Soda, but it still isn't strong.

Are there other flavors out there other than lemon or lime which really turn up the tartness? Maybe a special formulation?

I'd scratch my last suggestion anyway, as I just looked up a description of it: "A tart apple flavor reminiscent of Granny Smith apples, with a bit of cinnamon and spice." I don't think you'd want cinnamon and spice, even a little hint of it...in what you're making.
Yeah that wouldn't fit. :) I want it to be a very tart citrus but not more apple-y. I was wondering if there is just a "Tart" flavor additive out there like there is "Smooth" and "Sour".

I also added some Pixie per my friend Letitia, but maybe I didn't add enough.

I was just reading about Pucker ironically enough. But it said it was mainly a tobacco flavor additive. Hrm. :)
I would try FA kiwi myself. Maybe start at 1% and go up from there. you will find it difficult only using one apple. I have FLV sour apple I need to test, might want to tag me this evening to remind me. The apple is very faint and might work well. BTW I have TFA apple (tart green) and there are no cinnamon or spice. You have to carefully read the TFA apple titles & notes, they have at least 3 green apple flavors.

FA oba oba is also called a tobacco additive but works well in fruit flavors. Quite a few additves are used for other than what they first became popular for.

I am not sure about TFA Sweet & Tart. It is their interpretation of Sweet Tart candies. Besides the obvious sweet (sugary) and tart(ish) notes; I find it has a rather nondescript fruit candy note (much like the unidentifiable fruit flavors of real Sweet Tarts) to it as well.

I would be more inclined to try LorAnn Tart & Sour instead. It uses a combination of citric acid, sodium citrate, and malic acid. It can often be found at many local stores (like Walmart, and Hobby Lobby) in/around the cake decorating supplies.

As always, different people find it's effectiveness to vary. Keep batch sizes small, and start with small amounts (0.25-1.00%), until you decide if and how it works for you.:)

I agree about the TFA sweet and tart. I don't find to do either sweet or tart particularly well. It is useful for toning down pixie sticks with softer lighter flavors. I sometimes use WF pixie and TFA st at 2% each to soften the edges.

I just ordered some Flavorah Pucker. I'll let you know how it turns out.

OK...I'm glad you decided to be "the guinea pig" and try it.
I could never do it.

Honestly, I was sitting here eating some Chewy Lemonhead Tropical candies (and still am)...when the alert popped up that you'd quoted me. So I came here to read your new post. Even some flavors of those, (with a whole lot of sweetness, as well as the tart)...make my mouth pucker and the insides of my jawline cringe a little bit. So I know there's no way I would try a flavoring whose only purpose is to make me pucker! Makes the memory of the first and only time I got talked into trying a Warhead at the candy store...come flooding back into my thoughts.

I finally got around to tasting the FLV sour apple...not at all sour or sharp to me. It is a lovely flavor that if I didn't know it was apple I'm wouldn't know what the fruit was. It is pleasantly tart with out any dryness and tho soft the fruit note is subtle and enjoyable. It is a Flavorah so probably not fully steeped and will change some. I'll update in a couple of weeks.
