Tasting the nic

I've just started DIY because I can't seem to get a good long lasting flavor from any of the mixes that I've purchased. But I'm getting an odd taste in all of my mixes. Since it's in all of my mixes I started smelling components and the odd taste I get is from the nic. I'm using VT nic, which I've read on here is supposed to be such a clean taste, but I'm pretty sure it's the nic I'm tasting (think I have a sensitive taster - wish I could get a good flavor from my e-liquids, that's why I started DIY). I cooked them in the crock pot for 4 hours and then they sat over night.

So do they need more steep time? Is that why I'm tasting the nic in my mixes? I've read that some folks mix and vape, especially certain flavors.

Thanks for the help everyone

Ok, I don't get anything but a slight sweetness from straight vg when vaped, the DW tasted and smelled mostly like nothing, the nic is the only other thing in my mixes except the flavorings. So will a longer steep time help blend the flavorings and the nic a little more? From what I've read on here, you pretty much can't beat the VT nic. I'm only using 6% nic in my mixes so there's not THAT much in them.

I'm trying to think ... VT? Can't remember. But two vendors I like I've bought nic from are Nude Nicotine and Wizard Lab. I think you're right about different vendors nic solutions tasting a little different. Nude Nicotine gets my 5 star rating for not tasting anything unusual. And Wizard Lab get 5 star also. Both top notch nicotine vendors.

I hope you mean 6mg and not 6% which is 60mg.

I didn't taste them before. Should I have? Like I said this is my first batch, so I'm very green. The odor of the flavorings was a bit weak before heating, much stronger when they were still warm right out of the crock pot, then they settled down quite a bit after they cooled. I don't really smell the nic in the final product, but I can taste it, especially in the ones that were WAY too light on the flavoring.

Ummmm, how do you know what you did with the crock pot if you didn't taste them before you put them in?

I have many recipes and only a few get any benefit from steeping. I have some recipes that don't like heat and will go funky if left in a car parked in the sun for a day. But I know this because I've tasted them before.

I use VT nic and never noticed any taste and my mixes are 24mg. I do mostly fruit flavors from Flavour Art, use 3 to 5% flavor depending on which it is and never steep any of them, mostly "shake and vape". Four hours "cooked" sounds like a long time but then I don't use tobacco flavors, so far I stick to the easy ones.

What size e-juice are you making? The only ones I've had that I don't care for, got too strong a week or so later and I plan to add more plain VG/PG and nic to lighten them up again and readjust my recipe!

I use Nude Nicotine base, because they advertised "No taste". I had been using bade from MVS and did not like the taste in flavored juice, BUT it was good in tobacco juice as it had a (WOOF) good TH! Nude is IMO flavorless, clean and stable. I personally would try different VG or PG, and I understand that High Mountain has excellent products. I get mine on Amazon and seem fine.

You don't really specify what the odd taste tastes like? Is it a kerosene like flavor? That's what most nicotine smells and tastes like. At least the half dozen brands I have tried do. If you leave it open to the air for a bit it should fade. Also, you can just use more flavoring. Some mixes hide it and you'd never know it's there. Others let it shine right through.

Well, chalk that up to my first major DIY mistake (I'm pretty certain there will be more). I'll be doing that for sure in the future.
Thanks

5ml to start. Yep, I just learned that I needed to taste before doing anything else. I'll do that in the future.
Thanks

I heard or read that tobaccos and anything with creams or custards have to steep longer than others normally do. Is there fact in that?

Some of mine do and some of mine don't.

I've got a very complex cigar recipe that doesn't need any steeping, it's the same great taste from the moment it's mixed as it is 2 months later.
I've got a much less complex pipe tobacco recipe that needs to steep 2 weeks to be great and when fresh it is rather crappy.

Just a couple of examples and also why it's important to realize that unless you are copying a recipe, it's all experimentation and assuming generalities are true will put a mixer at a disadvantage.

Another one to add to my "memory" bank of do not forgets. Thanks again. I think maybe I should just keep everything that I've read or heard and stick it in an "only if I need it" corner and start from scratch and just play like a curious little kid (with a notebook so I'll remember what worked and what didn't). I really appreciate the advice.
