got lots of silica, ekowool and sterile cotton collecting dust, the only thing I use now is Hemp fiber, nothing like it

I swear by cotton but have never tried this hemp fiber, I hear it's great but have not ventured into it being that I bought a bag of organic cotton balls and a box of sterile cotton, lasted over 6 months so far, and probably another few years to go on it. IDK how some people hate it so much, I honestly dont even get a weird flavor from it at the start. I don't boil the sterile or organic cotton balls and maybe that's why. Give it another go I say, try the boxed sterile cotton and try not to handle it so much before putting it in, also make sure your hands are clean! (I know that should go without saying but people everyday prove to me that every precaution should be stated lol) You may surprise yourself!

I miss and loved cotton! THe price point, the ease of use and the ability to use in a million diff. coils was so awesome to me..... I got into rebuildables and started to get acne like I was a 13 year old lol, I started coughing more than normal and didn't think it was cotton as I had just started rda's and was using mesh in my genny. Never thought that it could have been cotton, I then went to all VG and lowered nic. I mean I did it all and nothing helped. then one day I would vape and I would get nauseous and if I stopped vaping it would go away and come back if I vaped. I then switched out the cotton and it would stop for about a day until It would come back and I would switch cotton again. after 2 weeks of this I changed to some ekowool I had but never used....Bingo bango i'm cured. Acne went away the feelings went away and it helped me find Boba's! All in all I miss cotton dearly but ekowool hybrid with the silica core is working fine for me even in my Drippers!

So what could it be in the cotton that is causing irritation and other odd symptoms? I forgot about the nausea until I was reminded by StrappedKaos. Exact same thing happens to me. My first thought was too much nic, but I remembered the juice was using 0 nic....lol. I have always thought of cotton as pretty "inert" or non-toxic so I just don't get it.

i think the type/flavor of the juice has a huge bearing on whether cotton tastes right for you.
for example, my citrus/fruit flavors taste great on cotton.
but most of my dessert/creamy/tobacco vapes taste much better on mesh.
and my fruit vapes dont taste right on mesh.
so for me, i need to try each wicking medium with each juice to find the sweet spot.

I've gotten the dirty sock flavor when I clean heads with an ultrasonic cleaner. I thought it was residual water in the wicking, but it turned out to be a combination of a wick still slightly damp, combined with poor juice saturation on start up. So far, I like cotton. I rewound and rewicked a few Kanger PT coils using Kanthal 32 and Q-tip cotton. I found them to be superior to a standard off the shelf PT coil. Vapor was clearly superior to a standard factory built coil. You just have to make sure cotton stays saturated, IMO. An adjustable air flow tank helps with that.

I just watched a video that will be beneficial to anyone wondering how hard it would be to re-coil a Nautilus, which is a great cotton wicked tank. This guy has it down pat.

Definitely had the ol' dirty sock :D Mine was a damp wick, but I find if I do any kind of cleaning with water, 99.9% alcohol flushes the water right out. I use a recycled glass dropper bottle filled from my huge container to carefully apply a few drops before shaking out, reapplying and leaving to evaporate.

The thing I learned with cotton is it has to be saturated good before use. I have been using cotton balls on my Kayfun and have found that if I saturate the wicks thoroughly before tank assembly I don't get any cotton taste at all. I have 0 break in period.

It's all about the right amount of cotton and saturating the wicks as much as you can without flooding. That's what works for me.

I make cotton wicks for my drippers using strands from cheese cloth. For a 3/32" ID coil I use 52 strands - 26 folded over for pulling through with a thread. I haven't tried cotton balls because that method doesn't seem very consistent. If the wick is too tight, it won't draw juice properly and will scorch, too loose isn't good either. Also, since I'm not a cloud chaser an only use a vw mod, I have found that low power settings work the best for the flavor of the juices I mix. You can use high power, but you must be very careful to keep the wick saturated. When the wick begins to go dry, it gives off a taste that reminds me of ironing a cotton shirt at very high temp. One more draw is too much.

agreed. when cotton was still new to everyone, folks were advising to allow cotton to soak for an hour, 4 hours, even overnight. later it was discovered that this amount of time is unnecessary, but there is still something to be learned- which you have hit upon. and that is to let the cotton soak. sure you dont need an overnight soak, or even an hour but a minute or so will be beneficial.

If I set up the wicks correctly there's no taste with cotton. But I've given it up for the most part due to laziness...

With ecowool or silica I can, once a week or two, dry burn a coil and reload the juice, quick - easy.
With cotton I find I need to replace wicks every day or two to get continued taste and performance...too much work.

replacing a wick vs having to rebuild the entire thing is worth it IMHO. takes minutes if that to replace a cotton wick but much more time to rebuild the whole thing. It's all personal preference though, as long as we're all vaping and staying away from the cigs we all win :p

My point was....

Cotton - replace wick daily (few minutes) & rebuild ever couple months...
Ecowool - rebuild ever couple months...:)

Less fussing = more vaping.....

How are you building your Ekowool wicks? I've been doubling a 1mm piece and doing ~4/5 wrap of wire ending up ~1.5 - 1.8Ω. I'm curious if it's better to have a loop of silica above the juice channel vs a cut strand or two. Hope that makes sense.

I use two different methods, take a straight pin of very thin syringe needle, lay the ecowool along side and wrap...trim up the wicks.

Or wrap the coil around a toothpick or screwdriver shank, slip off and thread the ecowool through. I put a small piece of teflon plumbers tape on the end of the wick to make it easy to slip into the coil.

SS Mesh is the best setup... If you have the ability/skill to use it :2cool:

I've used:

Silica- its okay for a trouble free idiot proof setup.
SS Mesh - the most indestructible builds to date. I've never had to carry anything else as "backup" with an SS build.
Porous Ceramic stone - meh.... more work than is worth, and it doesnt wick too well. i'll stick to mesh
Ceramic rope( Nextel XC-116) - no complaints... just like silica to me.
Cotton - I just see it as Rebuildables 101 for dummies...

SS mesh is by far my favourite vape...

*This is ALL subjective, so don't attack me if your opinion differs from mine.
