I can tell you :) the threaded ring is set into a bored out section into the tube.
I'll attempt to attach a pic...

As you can hopefully see, the ring is approx the same ID as the tube, so the lip is very small. I've pulled the threaded ring out slightly to help you visualize better.

I've contemplated the box mod idea too. :)

Well, that sucks. I'm deployed right now, so I can't get my hands on the machinery to re-bore it if I cut it off. Maybe I'll give it a shot when I get home here in about five months, or maybe I'll go at it with a dremel tool, and some epoxy. I guess it all depends on how bored I get.

Aphex,

My apologies. I didn't remember that the bottom of the tube is slightly bored out. Not much---maybe 1/32"---but enough to make the female thread ring not fit without the slight increase in the inner diameter of the tube. If someone crammed in the ring without the boring, the bottom cap wouldn't screw on. The boring is no longer visible on my reassembled red acrylimax tube with the super-glued inner ring.

I'd be hesitant to use a hand-held dremel for fear of gouging the tube or leaving the inner diameter out-of-round. A small piece of sandpaper wrapped around a finger might work nicely, assuming the acrylic is soft enough. With a Clearmax, any sanding beyond the thread ring might make the the tube look cloudy. Sigh. Every "solution" brings new problems.

I will say that for such a cheap assembly, threading the bottom cap onto my Acylimax feels as smooth as silk. Just like a ProVari. LOL.
