A couple of years ago, I covered the story of a couple celebrating their 75th wedding anniversary, at a nursing home. Both of them were fit as a fiddle, but it was easy to see the smokers slumped in their wheelchairs, on a patio off the main dining room.
I was sweating, and it was fiercely uncomfortable in direct sunlight that day. But there they sat, abiding by Florida law on smokefree interiors of buildings. I understand that law, and don't disagree with it. But the fact is that today we have what should be an acceptable alternative for lifelong, addicted smokers, something that satisfies their needs while not bothering others.
If ever anyone needed our clean nicotine delivery devices, those poor old souls in wheelchairs are poster children for that need. They sure don't need another patch or pill!
Consider also that we need positive press, and our stories of triumph over cigarettes are of little interest to anyone but us. But ... if the e-cig could help the elderly or bedridden, now you're talking universal interest in a positive way.
Forget "think of the children." Instead, "think of the elderly!"
