Great letter! I remember seeing a report that showed an extreme correlation between consumption of nicotine and (not getting) Alzheimer's. Unfortunately, any research that shows positive effects of nicotine will be summarily dismissed/blackballed/destroyed by the current PC medical establishment.

Good job Vocalek....

I just watched a program on PBS on stress and the health effects it has. Part way through the program which compared primates to humans and heirarchy-based stress, I thought of your article about using nicotine to self-medicate. People buy aspirin and tylenol to ease pain, so why not nicotine to ease stress effects? The program went on to also touch on strange Alpha Male and Alpha Female dominance behavior which goes a long way to explain why some anti-smokers won't let go even after winning the smoke fight, but wanting to to also control vapor. That's a whole other story, though.

Despite my dependence (don't like the term addiction and it is not accurate anyway) on nicotine now...I first realized early on in my smoking carreer, that it took away the bad feelings brought on by stress. I don't do well with stress. You won't see me giving speeches in front of a big crowd and it takes at least three shots of vodka to ask a girl out on a date....LOL. I have also noticed my stress levels rising since I am not getting the nicotine I used to. Even after a year of vaping, which should be enough time to adjust, I haven't yet. Still have to burn one when stress gets high....and I am OK with that.

Anyway, before I ramble too much, just wanted to say I agree with your article. I don't believe anything is absolutely evil....nor absolutely good. It's all relative....

Elaine, I just found this and thought it would interest you:

Study suggests lung cancer patients use tobacco to cope with anxiety - UB Reporter

Unfortunately, this good insight gets turned on its head in terms of their recommendation to health care providers on how to deal with this reality. Rather than think about nicotine alternatives that could help patients stop their smoking, which is indeed very dangerous for a lung cancer patient, but still obtain needed depression and anxiety relief, it looks like the researchers may be thinking only within the traditional "cessation" box, as follows:

"Dean and colleagues say they hope these study results will encourage health care providers to routinely ask detailed questions about the quality of lung cancer patients’ sleep and focus more on anxiety counseling and smoking cessation for these patients, particularly those who reported trouble sleeping."

I think they need some good advice from you!

Elaine..... Fabulous and again, thank you, thank you for all you are doing. Prior to reading your symptoms while you were in Nicotine withdrawal, I was furious about the quit smoking commercials showing ex-smokers not being able to function without nicotine (Nicoderm Patch). But you made me a believer as I've never attempted to rid nicotine from my body (Thank God for Ecigs) so I thought those commercials were another ploy to make former cigarette smokers look like idiots once again. The nicotine commercial doesn't tell the entire story like "Elephant In the Room" and I thank you. Now I understand the nurse I met at CVS purchasing the patch (prior to me knowing about ecigs). I asked her how long has she been on the patch and she told me "EIGHT YEARS!!".... Of course, I gasped but now I know why..... Thanks, Elaine.

This brief report was in CT's news in 2007. http://www.smokersclubinc.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=4664 I still have not found out the outcome.... maybe I'll call the Psych Center and inquire if patients are permitted to smoke. This would be a perfect place to introduce ecigs if we could just get the blinders off non-greedy concerned officials.

Short story: Went to my doctors for normal visit.... pulled out my ecig..... demonstrated vaping..... he was clueless but amazed..... he left the room came back with 6 more doctors for me to demonstrate my ecig. I gave all of them ECF's website. I wish I had the $$'s in order to devote all of my time to demonstrating the benefits of vaping....
