Looks to be like there are a few issues with the firmware that I'm thinking most if not all of which can be remedied with a firmware upgrade. joyetech have stated that the 1.0 firmware that ships with the device is technically still basically an early release version, and that a new version will be available probably early in the new year. But out of the box it looks like it'll be limited to about a 2.8A output (may be hardware, may be firmware -- this is probably a firmware limitation to make sure it doesn't crap out in the mass market while they stress-test a new firmware for higher outputs), doesn't dynamically adjust voltage to meet wattage when a new device is attached (firmware issue), forgets settings when in standby but not when turned off and on again (firmware bug no doubt), and won't shut off when the battery reaches critical levels (really bad firmware issue, but a firmware issue nonetheless).

Hopefully they'll address these issues with the 1.1 firmware.

Thanks for the summary. Two things that stood out the most for me was the 2.8A output and no 'dynamic' variable voltage. Hope both are firmware fixable just for the sake of the early adopters.

Ya think! Ya think?! It feels like a weird episode of The Twilight Zone with a bit of Lost in Translation thrown in.

Most vendors/manufacturers are constantly asking feedback on what "we" want. Les power, buggy firmware, deeper menu options are not part of the list, I would hope. Perhaps we should ask for those things, huh?! Then we could expect the most powerful, advanced, thought controlled multi-processing unit ever made.

I'm standing by until the hardware limitations can be confirmed, one way or other.

See you in firmware version 1.3.2 eng us.

Not sure if this is going to be a problem but wanted to mention it anyway to save some members potential grief.

Based on the German review with the wattage up and down and all over the charts it looks the E-Vic is using pulse width modulation.Basically its a sine wave with spikes and valleys that achieves an average wattage or volts.

I just read a post by member using a Zmax whos experiencing power surges with a freshly charged battery and its popping atomizers. He just fried a couple of atties along with an expensive HH357 that hes been using for a year.

Again this might not even be an issue but wanted to put this out there to be on the safe side cause I'd hate to see someone pop all their atties and be left high and dry.

The dynamic (that is to say, "real") VW issue is definitely a fimware thing. The amp limit is up in the air, but I hope it's firmware-fixable. The German review definitely exposes some serious limitations.

This link to an Italian review site seems to confirm that a little extra caution might be needed when putting in fresh batteries. click translate at the top of your browser. You can find the link here eVic VS Provari | Esigarettanews.com

For those that dont want to read, they measured measured 8.5 watts using a 1.4 ohm attie and then measured again with a freshly charged battery and were able to get 9-10 watts out of it.

The use of PWM doesn't necessarily mean there will be an issue if it's done correctly. Just about any device that uses a voltage boost circuit to get more voltage out of a single 3.7v uses PWM, and I've only read about a few that were poorly implemented.

I really hope the amp limit is hardware controlled and not just controlled by the firmware. Any good design should include fault tolerant amperage control and low battery shut off. From the one review I've seen, the battery shut off is passive (warning) and it doesn't actually shut down before the battery is fully drained. That alone is enough to make me wait until they have another hardware revision.

I agree with you, my choice in PV's uses PWM but they also have a filter that amplifies and buffers the signal making it linear to avoid these kinds of spikes.

My biggest concern would be if they can fix that with a firmware update. Some things HAVE to be designed physically onto the chip in the first place or no amount of software updates can address them.

Im seeing a lot of people with a very basic knowledge of electronics stating that firmware can fix most issues and thats not always the case.

i cancelled my preorder.
you all will know why yourselves soon, good luck.

Oh J*sus, here too? Why are you being so "mysterious", also on the other thread about the eVic? If you have to say something important then simply say it. But please don't make these strange statements here without any reasoning behind.

If i have to guess it's because the World ends on 21th of December and you don't want to waste money before that??

agreed.

if I had to guess... secondary ECF account with conflicting product interest. :rules:
