I have combed my old posts this morning and found closed threads. I can only imagine what some noobs would think reading some of them so I'm trying to offset those plus add some new, hopefully, information to help others.
When I was 6 months into vaping, all of a sudden having had no problems at all, one night I began to cough violently when inhaling and it started as soon as vapor hit my throat. Over the following days, my lungs were filled with the thickest, most awful mucous I've ever experienced and I'm both allergic and asthmatic so that's saying something. Maybe TMI but I want to explain. This stuff was so thick I had to grab it with my fingers and pull it from my throat after coughing to hours to get it to there. I began a search here for anyone who had similar symptoms after vaping as long as I had. I found some and that's where I posted previously.
I tried everything... adjusting PG/VG, going plain with no flavors, dropping nic levels... on and on. What I believe I have discovered talking with a couple of offline vapers is that this could be a form of purging when the lung cilia wake up. I never got the typical smoking withdrawal symptoms when I started vaping and thought that was odd. I think what has happened is that it was just delayed. Maybe it depends on how long I smoked and how long they had been desensitized. I smoked for 58 years and the last ten of those were 2 PAD.
Now for the good news. That went on to one degree or another... some days better than others but all pretty bad.... for 4 and a half months and then disappeared as abruptly as it started. I hate to say this but I returned to smoking a few a day as I couldn't vape until I learned how to nose exhale and enjoy it. Smoking did alleviate the copious congestion and spasmodic coughing. I kept smoking just enough to keep the violence from happening... just kind of weaning and using smokes more as aides.
Well... this is getting long so I'm just saying for those who might be worried or think they have to stop vaping. You can get the smoking withdrawal purging many months after starting to vape.. in other words decreasing or stopping smokes.... it really doesn't have to do with vaping but with smoking cessation and it doesn't , necessarily happen right away so don't give up.
Edit: Mine may have been worse due to it starting in May which is allergy season here but it was definitely not JUST allergies as I've had those for years. And my usual prescribed nasal spray, allergy pills and inhalers didn't even put a dent in the symptoms over the 4+ months I went through this. Also forgot to add... I went to stop-smoking forums and found that this same thing was happening to those folks about 9 months into quitting smokes... give or take a month or so depending on how bad their lungs were before quitting.
