This is from the Health Section- Symptoms when you quit smoking-

12. Thyroid issues when quitting tobacco
There is discussion currently among the medical community about possible thyroid problems occurring after smoking cessation. It is not known how widespread this is or how serious. The appearance of thyroid problems soon after quitting is statistically higher than should occur, so there is a question whether smoking suppresses the symptoms of thyroid disease or whether quitting triggers it, or indeed if smoking causes or exacerbates it. This is uncommon so not a major issue for worry. Apparently weight gain or weight loss can be minor effects experienced by many, related to thyroid activity. This whole area is not fully understood so you should not read anything into our commentary, instead please ask your doctor.

Well, got my update from the doctor. Seems I have Grave's Disease. Meds are helping, and lowering the nicotine to 5 mgs helps with the cardiac symptoms. Been doing alot of reading on it, and as long as the meds work, it is controllable :) Just going to take a few months to get back on my feet... which just cant happen fast enough!

Thank you for this thread... it really helped :)

I went through 4-years of tests, elimination of possiblities, and then more tests, over and over. Getting an answer is Bitter Sweet . . . but now you know and you can stop worrying and start working towards controlling it.

The very best wishes!!!!!!!!!

Thanks :) Very appreciated!

I've always had the symptoms of low thyroid and my tests always come back normal ... TSH at .8 and T4/T3 normal. Still, I have 10 out of the 12 or so symptoms listed including fatigue, cravings, weight gain, blood sugar slightly above range, and outer 1/3 of eyebrows missing/thinning. The article below explains a lot about how other things can cause your body not to use the hormones that are produced, leaving you with symptoms even though lab tests are normal. Doctors don't seem to take action when the numbers are in range. My doctor mentioned this lately and my research on the web confirmed what he told me. This article was an eye opener that made me decide to lose weight, exercise, and watch what I eat. It's the best explanation of my symptoms I've found.
