Ok when you get a dry hit and set the iHy down (straight up and down no tilting) if you leave it there a minute is the next hit dry? Or normal as if you had tilted?
If it is a normal hit after letting it sit a bit I'm led to believe your wick is not wicking fast enough for your coil

My cousin just got one yesterday. Went over there to try it out. First off, the glass has a very unclean and chippy edge, not a big deal because that part gets covered by the knurling. The smooth bottom part is nice and matches up better on ss mods. The wick hole is smaller than the AGA-T, which i don't care for. The 1mm air hole needs to be modded IMO. Otherwise it hits just like the old AGA-T, very nice.
Ahh spring cleaning accomplished. My desk looks pimp now. And I found where that trail of ants came from! I followed one and his buddy down my desk, they went into my coworkers desk, then out of his desk into a wall, to appear on the other side in my woodshop

It's a normal hit. And so is it just burning the juice when it isn't quite as wet or something? I don't see any boiling, no glowing, no abnormal vapor production, etc. But it tastes something awful. Like melting wood and steel.

I think you probably answered your own question in the original post. The wick is on the older sider, it's possible it's gunked up and not wicking well enough to keep up with the coil.
It will get full saturated if you let it sit for a bit and the hits you take are great. During normal vaping it's not wicking fast enough. Depending on what juice you use it may be gunked up and not wanting to work.
You can either re-torch it or make a new wick.

Boiling would happen if it was over-wicking, your problem seems to be that it is not wicking enough. You can fix this a couple ways. I think you may be better served by rolling and oxidizing a new wick though

I did re torch it before setting this current coil up, just to be sure, and it still came back. But I'm probably just gonna make a new wick.

I know why it boils, I was just giving a list of things that aren't happening but are commonly associated with bad flavor. I think I'm just gonna make a new one...but honestly I got this one from Bert at Trippy Tips glass, cause I was having a bad wick day and he was bad ... enough to bring me one to my work. Apparently he oxidizes in his kiln -- best oxidization I've ever seen, and even with my $85 torch I always have shorts. So in other words, I really don't want to have to throw this one out...but....well.........here we go...
WoW! I actually had to look at the people in the background to convince myself that the video and his fingers weren't speeded up. Simply amazing!
On that note, any great tips for good, thorough oxidization? I've tried the cig paper technique, and while it's okay it just doesn't cut it for me cause I end up having to play with the coils and inevitably end up pushing them off the carbon. I also have torched for long periods with a high quality torch, and the only results I've ever had were the wick starting to break apart from overheating, or shorts when I set it up. Only way I've been able to build a reliable wick up to this point is by doing my best to oxidize with the torch but not overdoing it and then doing the cig paper method, probably more than once.
EDIT: I should add that I've done the technique (think it's Jack Frost?) where you torch both sides, then roll. I usually torch both sides, roll it, torch it more, juice burn with 100% vg a few times, and still....shorts all day.

I'm almost hesitant to give you this recommendation but I hate seeing people struggle. The reason I'm hesitant is because not everyone uses the same kinds of batteries so don't do this unless you are using an AW or MNKE in 18650 mode.
1) Put away the torch
2) Roll a wick and juice burn it 3 times
3) Install wick and wrap coil
4) Insert a 18650 battery and start tap firing it. Yea, it's going to short. Keep tap firing and don't get your wire too hot. It will short and oxidize the wick underneath where it is shorting. You will see the short move down the coil as it oxidizes the wick. Once it's glowing evenly you're done.
5) Vape
This works for me. If you google "Todd Ecig Reviews" he has a video on it. I've done a few dozen coils like this without a problem and with minimal effort.
