On that note, any great tips for good, thorough oxidization? I've tried the cig paper technique, and while it's okay it just doesn't cut it for me cause I end up having to play with the coils and inevitably end up pushing them off the carbon. I also have torched for long periods with a high quality torch, and the only results I've ever had were the wick starting to break apart from overheating, or shorts when I set it up. Only way I've been able to build a reliable wick up to this point is by doing my best to oxidize with the torch but not overdoing it and then doing the cig paper method, probably more than once.

EDIT: I should add that I've done the technique (think it's Jack Frost?) where you torch both sides, then roll. I usually torch both sides, roll it, torch it more, juice burn with 100% vg a few times, and still....shorts all day.

I'm no expert, but all I do is cut my mesh to size, torch both sides, roll, then juice burn it 3 times without quenching. That seems to work fine for me.

I'm almost hesitant to give you this recommendation but I hate seeing people struggle. The reason I'm hesitant is because not everyone uses the same kinds of batteries so don't do this unless you are using an AW or MNKE in 18650 mode.

1) Put away the torch
2) Roll a wick and juice burn it 3 times
3) Install wick and wrap coil
4) Insert a 18650 battery and start tap firing it. Yea, it's going to short. Keep tap firing and don't get your wire too hot. It will short and oxidize the wick underneath where it is shorting. You will see the short move down the coil as it oxidizes the wick. Once it's glowing evenly you're done.
5) Vape

This works for me. If you google "Todd Ecig Reviews" he has a video on it. I've done a few dozen coils like this without a problem and with minimal effort.

Thanks, EZ! I'll try this when I get home. I use the AW 18650s right now but have some MNKEs on the way. Have you not had any problems with the coil moving and shorting out again? This sounds too good to be true! I will be cautious, though, cause that definitely sounds like it could lead to an overdraw of the battery if not. Also, do you boil your mesh before using it (just a side curiosity)?

Maybe it's too long and hitting the top cap?

It's the same length as the center post, so I sure hope not! :)

There are a lot of variables and a steep learning curve. Some tips tho... Don't let the wick touch the bottom of the tank. Use a half dead battery when "brushing" your coils on initial setup. Turn the PV when wrapping instead of wrapping the wire around the coil. You don't want the wrap too tight, but it needs to be flush all around. Once you figure it out you won't even need much oxidation. My current wick was only torched once before going in the iHy.

Well I don't know what I'm doing wrong then...guess my mesh just hates me :(

Do the peter k-man method. Use a qtip to wrap your coil. Then use the qtip to make your wick. All you need is 1 quick burn. Booyah

I've wanted to do this method for a while, but was too lazy to get the drill bit. A q-tip will work though??? Same size (3mm if I'm remembering right)?

if it touches the sides of the wick hole or the bottom of the tank will it short?

It isn't touching the bottom of the tank and I do use half dead batteries, and honestly I wrap the coil before I install the wick usually (don't know why but I've always found this easier). But I appreciate the info! Such a helpful community :) you guys are all the best!

My cousin calls this the "Throttle Method". Be careful when using 500 mesh and this process. It's easy to burn holes right through the mesh since it's so thin.

This sounds crazy, and I'm not sure if anyone does this, but my wick is actually shorter than the top of the screw head on the center post. It is almost dead even with where the wire connects to the center post, if that makes sense. I thought I was shorting out my wick on the top cap, so I cut the wick down even more. I could be, and probably am wrong, but if your wick is even with the top of the screw head, it might be too long.

Thanks for the heads up, I usually use 500. Will use some 400 I have, and if that's still a problem I'll go to the 200 I have somewhere.

I popped off the DT to be sure, and I am surprised at how close the post is to the top, but I'm pretty sure mine is still too short to touch it. It's even with the base of the screw, and through the top doesn't seem to touch.

No, very little chance of it moving and shorting again. It creates quite a large oxidized area around the wire. I can't say I've had to deal with a short for a few months either using this or Petar K.

To answer the other questions without creating multiple posts:
I don't think it matters if the wick touches the bottoms or the sides, as a general rule I try to keep it clear but just like with Petar K it doesn't seem to matter.

I've never burned through any mesh doing this....200, 325, 400, 500 and 635.

That's how I set mine up too. My wick was touching the cap and my juice was getting thick and dark. The positive screw is almost in the drip tip hole with the cap on.

Awesome. Now I'm super stoked to try it. And did you see my other question? I was curious if you boiled your mesh before using it and what you thought of that process?

Eh, people said Petar K was crazy too because it broke all the rules of traditional wick making. Unoxidized wicks, wicks touching the bottom of the tank etc.

I maintain for myself personally a couple dozen genesis devices and I have no idea where my torch is anymore. I re-wick them a lot since I'm always trying new stuff. Couldn't even tell you how many sheets of mesh I've blown through in the last couple months.

I've also never shorted a battery. Just go slowly, tap fire.

I haven't, but I might start. Emonty is very knowledgable and he probably has a point about the machining oil. I'll likely boil, dawn and re-boil a few sheets tomorrow. Can't hurt.
