Can't tell from that side, but is the leg from the bottom coil running along / touching the base, or going right from the negative screw and "up" to the coil?

Not touching the base, no. It's got to be the wick. Is there a way to test that?

If it were me I would pull the top of the coil away from the center post.

Can you move the wick inside of the coil?

When you dry burn, does that top coil glow well before the rest (or any others, but I have a feeling it's the top one from what I think I can see in the first pic..)?

Pulled the top coil out a little. No crimping. Coil is a day and a half old. Once it's dry they all light up at the same time. Testing .2 continuity through the wick on the multi.

Red during or after? About a third of it looks to glow after I let off the button. Reading .8 ohms when I test for continuity between the coil and mesh. Is that bad?
