i stumbled upon a thread leading to a discussion of FDA vs. e-cig on facebook. placed a comment and the person that commented after me, John, stated that we should stop calling them e-cigarettes.
"First off we REALLY need to quit calling them e-cigarettes, they are not cigarettes nor should they be linked to them by name. I think this is the major problem with why they are being fought in the first place! I prefer Personal Vaporizer (P.V) or a term one of the vendors use E.N.I Electronic Nicotine Inhalator. It is still not a widely known fact that these things save lives. It is our responsibility as vapers to inform and educate as many people we can to further advance comprehension and understanding on such a wonderful product. It is completely up to us!"-john h.

I completely agree! WE NEED TO STOP CALLING THEM E-CIGARETTES! Lets begin to disassociate ourselves with such a bad stigma. From now on i will only refer to it as my vaporizer or PV. I will also do my part by correcting anyone who dare call it ... every again. Help me spread the word and LET THE REVOLUTION BEGIN!

I agree with you though I find it funny that this forum's domain is "e-cigarette-forum.com". The first hill you have to overcome is getting the name of the site changed. I'm for it since I think it is also wise to dissociate from cigarettes. For example: "What are you doing" "Smoking an e-cigarette...but its not smoke and its not a cigarette" Good luck with that conversation.

First of I am John Hagan (the original FB poster). Thanks for re-posting I feel famous! lol

I have to disagree mist. There IS a stigma attached to the word cigarette there is just no getting away from it. If a person learns more about it and sees past the name to what it really is then great but for most non smokers/vapers as soon as they hear the word cigarette it is an automatic NO! O.K imagine it like this, you are one of the non-smokers or vapers and hear about a new bill to ban E-Cigarettes. First thing that comes to mind would probably be "good they stink and are unhealthy , blah blah blah". Now on the other side you hear the SAME info just now they replace the word cigarette with personal vaporizer. First thing that would most likely pop into your mind is "why". I think more people would LEARN about them and not just throw the idea right out the window. If the nomenclature changed ( although I think it might be too late already) I truly feel we would have more non smoking supporters.

When I tell people I have quit smoking, I call my alternative a nic stick. That way they know I am just getting my nic in a different way and still not smoking. If they want to know I explain what is in it and people seem very accepting of it. Of course, I do not use it in the office and still go walking up a mountain (which is so much easier now) with the real smokers. I still need my breaks!
I do agree that calling this new habit anything to do with cigarettes implies something bad in most people's minds.

That's cool, that's what opinions are for.

I suppose.

OK, but most "people" don't vote on legislation and those who do are supposed to read it, or rather, have their staff read it for them and explain so they have some idea of what they're voting on. This is what I meant by saying I don't think what we call them has much bearing on the reality of their acceptance.

Replies are in the quote. This is just my opinion and I DO see your point. I actually use "PV" most of the time or I call my PVs by their name such as "Where did I leave my Buzz?" or "Hand me my GLV, please." I use "electronic cigarette" when I'm trying to convert a smoker though. I think the term is appealing to them.
Much respect MWM.

Agreed. Although I truly believe that the more support and understanding we have from the "people" the more that will be reflected in laws and legislation. I know I am an optimist. :)

Much respect as well mist. Very nice response.

P.S you may want to hold off on the respect though. I DO watch fox news on occasion..... LOL

Yesterday, I demonstrated my 510 for my doctor. I started by saying, "I quit cigarettes 3 months ago..." and while he was grinning and saying, "That's great!" I pulled out my device and said, "... by using this vaporizer that gives me enough nicotine to keep from going thru withdrawal."

He said, "What is that? I've never seen one of those. Is it like an N-Haler?"

I explained the three parts of the device and asked if he'd like to see me use it. He did and I did, putting out a puff of fog that quickly disappeared. He marveled, "No smoke, pleasant smell, that's wonderful."

I then showed him a bottle of juice I get from a supplier who actually lists all the ingredients on the bottle in the formal FDA-approved format. He read the label and said, "This is great. There's nothing in here that could harm you. But, why not just use an N-Haler? I bet that gizmo costs more."

I replied, "N-Halers taste terrible!" And when he said, "Isn't that the point?" I said, "Not if your goal is replacing cigarettes with a healthier alternative. N-Halers just make you want a cigarette more. This vaporizer replaces the craving for a cigarette by satisfying that urge."

"That's just marvelous! I'm so happy you found something that works," he said. Then, I told him, "This device is what's called an e-cig."

"Oh, I've read about those; that's what this is?" He examined it again, re-scanned the bottle of juice and declared, "I see nothing wrong with any of this! The first ingredient is what's used in bronchial inhalers—that's what makes the mist, right? Do you have any problems with it drying out your mouth?"

"Yep, I've been using Biotine mouthwash and I drink a lot of water during the day."

"Good, that's the only problem I could see happening with this. The nicotine strength isn't likely to be toxic. [I'd given him a bottle of 24mg] I don't understand the negatives I've read about e-cigs."

To which I replied, "Well, who sells N-Halers?" He laughed, "Of course! That explains it! Well, congratulations to you for finding this thing and quitting cigarettes!"

I agree, and although PV and vaporizer sounds odd, we should come up with a completely new word. I mean I got something for my first that was less cigarette in profile, the eGo is almost more like a hybrid or funny shaped cigar. Considering the way I hold it, use it, and the flavor assortment available, I pretty much think of it as my wireless hooka!

I used to agree with the idea of calling them PV's, but I find that it just feels weird and I can't make myself do it.

I sometimes say e-cig, but i chose other. Like Sjct,(great post BTW!) i usually say something about not smoking, and that I used this (show model)...and say "it's like a mini-fog machine". Depending who I'm talking to I may or may not mention the nicotine.

Well then, I just hope you know better than to believe everything you her. You know that Rupert Murdoch has an agenda, right?

Of course! EVERYONE does and I wouldn't want to listen to anyone who didn't. I truly believe that we will never get anywhere when all we do is swing from one end of the pendulum to the other. I tend to lean a little more right than left on most issues but consider myself open minded. One of the reasons I don't post more on the political and religious forums is because they always seem to turn into shouting matches instead of a logical conversation. I am truly scared of fanatics on both sides of the fence! I believe so little of what is on T.V that I truly don't know why I watch it in the first place though. WOW this just kinda turned into a ramble. Sorry.

YEAH CALL"EM VAPORIZERS OR ELSE!!!!
That better? LOL
