Why is it so hard for you to understand that a name is a powerful thing?

Since you brought up a "food" example, let's go with that for a bit.

Would the majority of people rather eat a plate of snails or escargot? How about either a bowl of caviar or a bowl of fish roe? Would somebody rather order calf fries or calf testicles? If you saw Hu-Hu on a menu, it sounds a lot more exotic and enticing than if you saw Larvae in sauce on the menu.

Names send a very strong message to the general public. Why do you think big companies spend millions upon millions of dollars just researching what to name a product?

We're going in circles here. You keep making this sound like we're trying to make a new name for a new product. If we call it the wrong thing, people will get to know it by the wrong name and dislike it. Well, sorry to say it, but that has already happened. Would I prefer it be called a personal vaporizer or steamer or anything other than an e-cig? Yes I would love if that had happened. But it didn't. It's an e-cig whether you like it or not. This would be more of a discussion if you had said "What if these had become known as (insert your favorite name for our devices) instead of the e-cig?" Outside of that, there really isn't much you can do about it.

i am pretty sure this thread is done...like well done...
but i am going to say, I like knowing what i am eating....i don't need bullpoop smoke(steam) and mirrors to make me feel better..
it is an electronic cigarette-
do i need to glorify it?(by giving it some crazy steampunk name) No.
is it more important that whatever the hell it was/is called got me off the smokes, therefore sating my appetite.
yes.

I think that ship sailed long ago... The problem is nearly everyone knows what an e-cig is. If the name was suddenly changed today, it wouldn't change anyone's perception of what it is or does. For those "anti-cigarette" people who don't know what it is, one look at it in action tells them all they need to know. Do you honestly think that if it was called a "vaporizer" from day one we wouldn't be hearing about indoor vaporizer bans?

Personally, I'd rather eat a burger... err... ground up and formed cow muscle in the shape of a flat disc between two slices of bread. That's just me though.

My kids (21 and 14) both call it Mom's CrackPipe simply for the shock value when their friends see it for the first time. Next comes the, wow, I wish you'd tell my (mom, dad, brother, sister, grandma, etc...) about that so they could quit smoking too. Of course that's only within the confines of our home and only joking. If someone in public asks me what it is they'll chime in with e-cig or call the mod by it's name. They're both well versed in the terminology.

I'm still going to stick to the Personal Electronic Nicotine Inhaler System because it makes me giggle when I say it.

i tried to start a revolution a while back on ECF and have members spread the word to term our "ecig/electronic cigarettes" as PV's= personal vaporizers instead..or something of the like... to rid the stigma and association to cigarettes. hopefully one day it'll catch on...then the govt would be less likely to associate tobacco laws in conjunction with PV's.

everytime someone asks me about my device i say its a vaporizer.

what do you guys think? shall the revolution begin? help me out!

E-cig! E-cig! E-cig! (Can you tell I hate being told what not to do? :p )

Anything with "personal" in it rubs me the wrong way. "Personal banker," "personal masseuse" (as somebody else said), "personal moisturizer"-- they all sound too millennial generation for somebody my age.

To tell the truth, I have yet to hear a term I really like for them. "Electronic Cigarette" seems best to me because it best signals their value as a substitute for cigarettes. I think the more important challenge is to get a critical mass of smokers-turned-vapers as a means of more effectively resisting attempts to ban or over-regulate them.

I haven't read this whole thread, but I've said it before and I'll say it again: fake cig.

"Hey, is that one of those fake cigs?" "Yeah!" "I've heard of those! Good for you!"

"Sir, you can't smoke in here." "I ain't smoking. See? It's a fake." "Ah, okay then."

"That's smoke!" "No it's not, it's fake smoke." "Ah, okay then."

The word fake immediately makes it clear that it's not real. No more explaining to do. No need for terms like ecig or PV or PG or water vapor. It's all fake! For some reason, people seem to immediately grasp the concept of fake.

My lung reviver! My pimp stick. bwahaha!

My husband called a metal tampon at first. He didn't care for the initial price tag at first. He really snubbed it because he didn't understand it. He's starting to come around though. He's realizing that I'm not spending close to $40 a week and now it's like close to $20 every two weeks. It's more xbox games for him.

LOVE IT! "fake cig" is a great description and I can see how people understand the general concept behind it. I think I am going to adopt this name.

Here's an observation from an ol' fart that's buried horses before:

Ya know what? Any more, I could give a 'backy turd' what anyone calls their PVs. I'm asked, "Is that an e-cig?" Yepper, 'cause that's what the inquisitive folk calls 'em. I'm also asked, "Are you smoking an e-cig?" Noper, I'm vaping.

Until the vendors, Madison Avenue and Shajing Street, Shenzhen, Guangdong, China advertising in general calls 'em sumpin' else, guess what... THEY ARE E-CIGS!

Positive perceptions, information and others seeing consistency, such as an ol' fart like me that smoked for 45 years now happily vaping, those will be the elements that will convert the 'ashes masses'.

Some folk need up their nic levels. Day-um, we sure do get wrapped up in ourselves at times.
