The "slimmer base" is the lack of, what SvoeMesto calls in the original Kayfun design, the "collector tank". The collector tank is where juice may "migrate" to during the the initial fill or refil of the tank, before adequate negative pressure can be aquired.
Without the collector tank, owners of the KFL, R91% or clones need to be fairly quick about filling, refilling and/or aquiring a vacuum... or a bit of juice will dribble out the air vent.

Also, the 91% has the bottom fill port covered by the screw, while the original has the side fill port. I've got both and have grown to much prefer the bottom fill, especially in cold weather when I'm going in and out of the cold and the side fill port wants to leak.

Does yours leak when using the fil port?

Not sure what the issue is/was. I'm still getting to know it, as I'm only a few tanks in, so it may a simple issue of changing pressure from room temperature to sub-zero outside temperatures on breaks and such, or if I had some pressure inequality in the vacuum created within. It takes a little trial and error, and using a blunt syringe doesn't really create a seal when filling, so you've got to pace yourself and make sure you're in the right spot.

I have both as well. I prefer the Russian 91% over the regular one just because the size is so much smaller. It sits shorter which is nice. The regular Russian and regular kayfun is quite long/tall.

With that said, the %91 needs a screw driver to take the bottom screw out before filling. The regular one can be filled through the fill port. A needle syringe can actually damage the one way flow valve system on the fill port. It's best to use a special plastic tip type needle to fill it. When I bought my real kayfun from cloud 9 in the UK it came with one of these plastic tips and bottle to fill with. I use that on my regular Russian as well and never have issues with leaking out the fill hole.

I used to do the whole fill from the top with fingers on the air hole, then flip upside down and screwing the top on to create the vacuum... blah blah. Now I just assemble the whole unit, and fill from the ports on either one. Works just fine. I like the Russian 91 so much I wanna get a kayfun lite plus (which is the same size as the 91 since it also doesn't have the collector tank, but has AFC).
