When we watch people smoke analogues - and remember our own smoking days - it quickly becomes apparent that cigarettes are almost always held with the lit end tilted upwards from a horizontal position when not being smoked. Likewise, when people take a puff on a cigarette, more often than not they tilt the lit end downwards from horizontal. It's natural.
Anyone wanting to build a super lightweight and super small e cigarette (to get a vaping experience as close as technologically possible to smoking a real analogue) might consider getting rid of awkward momentary switches and clunky 'hard-draw' auto devices and introduce instead... a miniature, featherweight (and very cheap) tilt switch.
In my newest mod I have introduced a tilt switch into the body of the tiny 'El ......' vaper. The device retains its original micro-size of only 2 inches long and 6mm wide but now has incorporated the tilt switch to replace the momentary one on the lighter-sized aaa battery box I use.
I have taken some shots of the work as it progressed...
This shows all the components ready to construct the 'Micro Tilter'. The tilt switch is in the top left corner. A half section of ceramic fuse has already been placed in the tip end of the tube. Top right is a coil from an atty and bottom left, an LED. A section of the mesh will be oxidised and wrapped around the coil.
Here, the components are halfway through being soldered together ready for insertion into the tube.
This picture shows all the components connected up and tested just before careful insertion.
The finished object - working like a treat! Fully automatic, natural 'airy' vape and smaller than a regular roll-up! When the 'lit' end is tilted downwards it produces vapour and the orange ash lights up. When moved back with the lit end up (anywhere just beyond the horizontal position), it switches off.
Here's how it works. I plan to take the 'cut-off' timer out of an e cig battery and wire it into the battery box for this device (which already has a master 'off/on' switch). Then, if the Micro Tilter is somehow left activated (ie tilted downwards) - it will automatically cut off after 10 seconds or so. Like the El ...... - this is an open-ended drip device with the coil and mesh very near to the mouth end - giving a warm and satisfying vape.
