Thanks for a fair and balanced article. I tried an E Cigarette on December 6, 2009. I immediately quit smoking; this after 40 years of smoking two packs a day. The improvement in my health, particularly my ability to breathe, has been remarkable. I dont understand the FDAs reluctance to just regulate E Cigarette for what they are; a reduced harm
tobacco product. I suspect that health is not the driving force behind the FDAs insistence that E Cigarettes be classified as a drug delivery device; effectively banning them. I believe its more likely that the FDA is attempting to ban E Cigarettes because they compete with their cozy buddies (Big Pharma) nicotine replacement products. Few people can quit smoking cold turkey. FDA approved cessation products (with or without counseling) only marginally improve the chances of quitting. For me (and many other nicotine addicted smokers who can not or choose not to quit nicotine), E Cigarettes are a solution that reduces harm to levels that parallel abstinence. So in the name of public health, the FDA would have me give up E Cigarettes and return to a well known killer; smoking? Thanks for nothing FDA!
