Before we became a debtor nation Under Reagan's watch. Combined with world trade....
I've made quite a lot of money on world trade.

To be fair the post war period was quite a period where the middle class were actually building wealth. The banks took care of that with the credit card boom. I look at people in McMansions with fancy cars who own none of it with pity. Debt well beyond the assets they hold.

My friend Greg is middle management. Makes ~120k, owes 1.2million for his house and cars and credit card debt.

He knows I have money but keeps asking why I drive a 18 year old Honda Passport.

It's almost like having money and not spending it is a foreign concept nowadays. Everyone blames the government but ask them to save money before they buy something so they won't have to pay interest and they'll look at you like you're crazy.

EXACTLY!!!!!!!! My sister looks at me like I'm nuts cause I have a small mobile home on 2 acres. Guess what. It's ALL paid for. She owes 150K for her 1960 brick house. I'm saving for retirement. I have a few more bills left, make around 60K a year and should be doing ok. Hopefully.

Yep I like NO debt.
Our economy is based on unsustainable levels of debt.
A house of cards.
The 'adjustment' we went thru a few years ago is just the beginning.

I recently read an article that stated that the national debt is so big (almost 20 trillion) that if every person in this country were to contribute an even share to pay it off, that share would be almost $60,000. I'm frightened for our country's future.

Exactly, I payed cash for my truck and house (wrote a check).
When I bought this house it was a repo. The guy that bought it before me abandoned it because he owed more than it would ever be worth. Anyway, I go to the closing and the bank rep offered me 10k$ off if I financed it through his bank. I asked him "how dumb do I look" and handed him the check. You'd think I handed him a baby alien by the look on his face. My lawyers just laughed.

I have no idea who that is.
He's a guy that sells his classes and books on how to get out of debt, then as the first step tells them to stop buying anything nonessential. Which with a bit of common sense and willpower, his class would have been one of those nonessential items.

OK I'm making it sound simplistic, he really does have good stuff to say about getting out of debt, paying cash for everything, etc, it just bugs me when he tells people "You gotta quit spending money, pay for my class so I can show you how"
