Hey guys!

Have an interesting question. Has anyone any good tips for getting the wick trough a really thin wire coil, without disforming the coil 2 much?

The problem is, if you don't get enough wicking trough it won't contact the wire sufficiently also the juice ports will be too loos and spit up may occur.

Wire ID 2,5, cant go lower and can't go higher. Need spaced coil to remain spaced for ss316l is prone to shorts and won't work properly in TC when parts of coil in contact.

Any good advice is welcome.

No, you do want an even coil, nice and round.

Might want to try the "double insertion" method. Split your wick material in two, taper one end of each and work one through from each side, sort of like pulling wedges into each other.

I use 30 gauge round wire (kanthal, but same principle), and rayon, so it needs to be a bit tighter than cotton, And find that twisting it tight to install, and using the finger nail of one hand to keep the coil in place usually gets me there, but others swear by double insertion ;)

You already know the # of wraps and diameter you want so just prep a wick close to the diameter needed. When I was teaching myself to do this I would slide a thin needle into the wick for some support & then just pull the needle out. Don't forget to tighten up/roll the wick before wrapping the wire.

Three Suggestions I would make.

1) If you are using Bulk Cotton or Rayon, try using Pad Cotton like Muji. It is Much Easier to start with a precise amount of Cotton when using Pad Cotton.

2) After De-Skinning, Cut a Point at the End of your Cotton Strip. Then Gently pull the strip thru your Fingers 4 or 5 times to removes stray strands.

3) Wet your Fingers and the Twist the Pointy End of you Cotton Strip. The Twist should go about 1/2 way down your Cotton Strip. Then feed the Pointy End into your Coil and try to give the Strip a little twist as you Gently Pull it thru your Coil.

30ga is Kinda Thin wire. But in SS it is Doable.

I wrap using 32Ga wire and have no problem.
The trick is to lay a thin paper clip (straightened out of course) alongside the wicking material.
Then just wrap around both the wicking material & the paperclip.
When you remove the paperclip, just install the already wicked coil.

I'm the old phart on the forum, so if I can do it, so can you :)

Would have never come to that solution, thx alot, will def try it out next time I swap my coil!!!!

    Brilliant!

Forgetting for the moment that for TC regulation SS is one of the worse wire types to use....

I use 2mm coils with 29-30AWG wire all the time. I also use Rayon. The 'trick' (if there is/was one) is to take a 1-1.5" (or longer) section of it and tightly twist the Rayon so that it is tightly compressed. Yes it will expand a bit when you let go of one end! With a minor amount of practice you can judge how much to twist/compress that can easily slide through your coil.

Sometimes it helps if an end of the wick is 'pointy' or like 1mm for a 2mm coil that you can pass through the coil and grab and TWIST to help compress the rest of the wick so it fits in the coil. Sometimes you can try 'threading' the wick into the coil - IE: twist the wick in the same direction of the coils so that it kinda 'screws in' to it. :)

Now you have some fairly densely packed wick that is 'kinda-sorta' loose in your coil. The good news is: A) you have it threaded and B) with a slight amount of UNtwisting (twisting in the other direction) the wick will expand to fill your coil. Once expanded then trim/stuff or stuff/trim the ends into the juice holes and using a juice bottle SATURATE all the wick before putting your atomizer back together.

    I hope this helps!

Oh, I did something similar, just not knowingly, next time I will mind the direction of the twist and try to "screw" it in. Rayon is better in means of restoring its form?

So far have used shoelace and bacon, shoelace I have found is better in terms of twisting and stuff, bacon seems to stay rolled how it is.

Thanks for all the advice and time!

Oh, I failed to mention. I still wrap around silica.
4 strands of 0.8mm silica string works well.
Now I'm wrapping around 3mm Ekowool.
Nice thing about silica is that it never burns.
You can wash out the wick, pat it dry, and then dry burn the coil with the wick still in place.
Bad thing tho silica wicking is out of reach for me. What brand you use? I could maybe try source for it, perhaps I find a supplier outside my country. Ekowool, is it ceramical, I've heard ceramical can take also tons of punishment.

I still have Silica rope (various sizes) however no longer use it.

    Why?

While the stuff (as mentioned) is virtually Indestructible it 'wicks' the poorest of the three types: Silica, Cotton, Rayon.

I've often thought that it MIGHT wick better if it were not for the tight weave of the rope itself (recall ANY wicking material requires free surface area for the liquid to wick on).

However for builds that are NOT vaporizing faster than the Silica can wick juice it IS mostly indestructible and as such is reusable as well! :)
