Joined this group because I read this post and wanted to comment. I am one of those XY's and hope nobody holds that against me. I live in the south and have a safe to keep my firearms in like most of the people around here. Now about the gun.
If you only want protection when in the house, there's nothing better than a shotgun. There are several reasons why this is true. First of all the sound of a pump shotgun chambering a shell is unmistakable and frightening. They teach the police that when they hear that sound, get out of the building. Second is that you don't have to aim a shotgun, all you have to do is point them and pull the trigger, kinda like point and click. Thirdly, and this is something very important, the lead from a shotgun isn't going to travel through several walls and possibly hit somebody you were trying to protect. A round from a pistol or rifle can travel through your house and into your neighbors house.
With all this being said you have to practice using whatever weapon you decide on. This is both learning how to use it and when to use it. You need to run different situations through your mind and have a plan for different scenarios that you may encounter. The worst thing you could do would be to hesitate or be unwilling to use deadly force when presenting a weapon. Some women. and men, wouldn't have what it takes to do something like this. If you don't think you would be willing to take another life to save you or yours, don't get a firearm. But if you do get a firearm, no matter what type, you have to practice to the point that the weapon is just an extension of you and you are able to use it without even thinking about it, of course this is after you have decided that you are going to use it.

Hope this helps, Elapid---<

I learned to use weapons in the USAF and found that I was quite good at hitting targets. It's alot of fun and a stress reliever to go to the target range and blow away your troubles. So, I'd say go for it! Try it you may like it:) The advice about trying out various weapons is excellent...particularly if you have small hands like me!

Always take training courses and frequent the range during each year. You really should find a range that has guns for rental, so you can find the right one for you. As for me, I do carry and keep myself up to date on handling and cleaning. As we age your ability to handle your gun also changes, therefor going to the range regularly will keep you comfortable in handling you choice of firearm.

I've been reading comments about people owning dogs for protection and that a person should get specific kinds of dogs - rotts, german shepherds et all.

I'm sorry, but I disagree with this. Dogs are social animals. They bond to the pack and each other. Dogs consider their humans as part of the pack.

An example from my life:

I've always had mutts - mutts that no one has wanted. One time when my husband and I were living in Phoenix, we were getting ready for our trip to Minnesota.

My husband was outside packing the car, when a punk and his girlfriend came walking down the sidewalk with their rottie. As they got closer, the guy unleashed his dog and said, "Sic 'em". Before my husband could even get to his gun, our mutts literally broke through the security door after the rott.
Our mamma dog - which was part terrier and poodle had the rott on it's back by it's throat.
Our other dog, a cocker/poodle/terrier mix had the rott's back legs.
Even the cat, a tortie, was on the dog's belly just a tearing him up.
The cocker pup hid behind the evergreen and was barking like crazy.

My babies - all mutts and 1 cat - put down that rott giving my husband enough time to get his gun from the car and aim at the dog. This was the first time I had ever seen my dogs do this. (This wasn't the first time my cat went after a dog - twice she's gone after a coyote.) If it wasn't for them, my husband surely would have been badly hurt or dead.

My point - any animal, given enough love and bonding with a human, is just as effective at protection as a pure bred.

As for training a well balanced German Shepherd needs no protection training to do that job its instinctive. Best all around dog for individuals or a family.

I understand about the purebreds. Each purebred was bred for a specific purpose i.e. hunting dogs, water dogs, protection dogs.

All I'm saying is that don't rule out mutts as well. A social animal will have the same instincts as a purebred regarding protection. There are several breeds that are best for individuals and/or families, labs, cockers, whippets, shepherds, retrievers, newfoundlands. As long as the socialization of the animal into the family unit is good, dogs and even cats will protect.

I agree with all of you about dogs..and yes the cat! The OP's topic was guns. We do need a thread about dog protection though. Hey, my mom's dog was the best dog in a fight I have ever seen! No mailmen were safe and Heaven proctect the person who dared walk on her road if Mom was in the yard! A 12lb boston terrier named Doddlebug! LOL
So back to guns, ladies and gents!:)

Thanks for all your responses! Have a lot to think about! I do have a book at the library waiting for me,'Armed and Female' that got good reviews. I'm not taking this lightly. and I would so love to have a dog but my house is in foreclosure and I will have to find a rental soon, with three cats!
I like the idea of a shotgun, will research that.
Thanks again for all the great advice!
