Well Fran he's lucky to have you by his side. Hug him a little tighter, now. In my case, best they could figure is that I had a slighlty elevated blood level of the antibody for lupus as the most likely cause of the clotting and smoking of course exacerbates. If there is anything to the collective healing my thoughts are with him and you. Peace of heart be upon you.

Something like this is such a dramatic reminder that life and love are so precious. You know my thoughts and prayers are with you and DH, Fran.

5C, what a great pic! We have a neighborhood skunk who makes the rounds every night. He/she is beautiful, but sure stinks the house up when he comes around to visit

I'm thinking about a laptop so that I'm not tethered to my desk 12 to 14 hours a day. Would a refurbished one be a bad idea?

I've never owned or used anything but a desktop, so I am not familiar with laptops, but it would be nice to be able to go downstairs, out in the yard, or even sit on my bed and still have a computer. I have a feeling I'm wishing for something far beyond my budget tho

For DW I picked up a standard Netbook couple years back, and it's been pretty good. $300 class computer. For a new one, I'd make sure it's dual core and 2 GB (4 is better, but it's all about $).
Amazon.com: asus netbook: Electronics

Much of the time I use my smartphone, but will likely go with a netbook as my next general small computer. Tablets have more "wow" factor, but I really like a keyboard.

Uh huh, and then they can get in line with my other creditors

You mean you don't think Obama will save you? Just look how he has saved our country.:blink:

My self I'm not a laptop fan. I just got done fixing 5 of them. One was mine and I gave it to my daughter. She loves it but I hate the finger pad and they all run to hot because everybody puts them in their lap where the can't vent properly. That and 90 % of them have the power jack go bad because of poor design.

That's why you get the 10% that have Magsafe power connection :)

Unfortunately I've only had two of them pass through my hands and your right, it is a better mousetrap. But everybody that brings me one to repair didn't do that.
I'm very happy with the set up I have. I got 3 PCs linked to my big screen and a wireless keyboard in my hands. That way two can be doing their jobs while I'm on here. Just hot key from one to the other. Before I got a laptop I think I would get a Tablet.

I wish I could use my 50" plasma as a monitor, but we didn't think about that when we bought it. It doesn't have the connection for using it with a computer.

All you need is a VGA to HDMI cable or an VGA to 3RCA they are only a couple bucks. I got all mine going to a KVM switch but that's for multiple pcs you wouldn't need that.

Thanks 5C. I got to looking at my tv last night out of curiosity and discovered just what you posted. It does say in the manual that "it is assumed that you are not using with a computer", but I don't see why not unless you don't have a graphics card with the guts to push a 50" 1080p, or a power supply that's too wimpy. My graphic card has 2 HDMI, and an Svid connections and I have no doubt it has the power. I built this rig for gaming, albeit 4 years ago...and I have a 1000w power supply in it. I definitely would want to be able to toggle between tv and my 26" monitor tho. I may even have the needed cables in the "spare computer stuff" box down in the basement.

I'm going to look at some Netbooks just to see how a 10" feels on my eyes. Everyone knows my financial situation, there's no way I can go out and buy even a $300 netbook, but if I can find a decent refurbished one at a good price, MIL has said she might consider it for my birthday. Her incentive is that (in her words) "my big rig won't be sucking electricity 24/7." Also why I wouldn't be using my TV as main monitor. She flips her lid when I have both on at the same time!

A Gateway refurb netbook at Bestbuy: Gateway - 10.1" Refurbished Netbook - 1GB Memory - 250GB Hard Drive - River Black - LT4004U Newegg has them $10 less, though there's $9 shipping.

Seems to get decent reviews at Amazon, and can be upgraded to 2 GB (per the reviews): Amazon.com: Customer Reviews: Gateway 10.1" Atom N2600 1.6GHz Netbook | LT4004u

My wife's older netbook seems to be fine for general Web surfing, even basic office stuff (use openoffice). Iffy for movie watching, though upgraded RAM might make it doable (2GB, 204-pin SODIMM, DDR3 PC3-10600 upgrades for Gateway LT4004u Netbook, CT2824125 from Crucial.com, $11)

Screen size is really something to check for what works. Netbooks are designed for close-in use.

Ya just make the resolution bigger or even just the text. They have a lot of options for us old farts to use smaller screens.
