More and more hospitals are testing for nicotine and will not hire if it is found in the system.

Really? So they have, what, six nurses for the whole hospital?

With the shortage that's been going on so long I can remember mom traveling to the freaking Philippines trying to find people to hire back when I was in college (and I'm 51) up to today when my other nurse exec relatives (I'm surrounded by nurses in this family :) ) just hoping to find nurses who don't pilfer the pharmacy nor use street drugs and who can maybe read, the idea of excluding smokers is... almost funny.

In a tragicomic way given the way we stress our nurses to the point I'm surprised we don't see them falling over dead on the job regularly.

Lemme guess, the execs at the hospital are wondering why they can't find enough nurses to cover the hospital and why half their nursing staff looks like they were drug behind a truck after working doubles back to back to back to back to...

You can't walk around and use your cell phone while in uniform either, at least in the Air Force. They put a stop to that back around 08 or 09.

Let's face it, some of it has to do with the fact that they don't want you seen doing something that could be construed as "sullying" the uniform...

Wait, cell phones sully things?

They... do they poop on the uniforms or something???

I am active duty CG and I deal with the same issues! I have to vape in designated smoking areas, where I'm stuck sucking in second hand more harmful smoke! Plus I usually where civilian clothes for my job and I still get hassled, it's all just an image to uphold I suppose. I've been in for 10 years now so I just roger up with a sir/ma'am sandwich and carry out my job. The vaping thing is the only thing that really bothers me, not fair to be subjectified as a smoker when I'm just trying to do the healthier alternative.

It's called "military bearing". You should see what happens when someone walks around with their hands in their pockets.

Heh, I know less than nothing about the military except doing a stint as a civilian contractor type on a base. I can so picture "military bearing". It was a little... creepy at times. Definitely made me feel like a slob. :)

I can kind of "get it" with the military though. They don't have time to do "case by case" so it's lots of broad, tedious rules that often seem absolutely crazy. Like the time I almost laughed myself silly discovering there are "mil spec" chocolate chip cookies. Then it was pointed out to me that probably some private contractor screwed the military out of money by skimping, forcing them to tediously define cookies down to the chocolate chip count.

But thinking about how many times people yapping on their phones have run into each other, fallen into things, walked into traffic, you name it... yeah, I can see it. Best way to deal with it is an across the board ban.

(Or somebody was talking on their phone and ran into a General and splashed his coffee all over his uniform?)

^This is true. Sad, but true. That's how they treat the men and women who defend our 'freedoms'. No, I'm not disgruntled, just disillusioned. I received an Honorable Discharge.

I was in the Army for 14 years, 3 active and the remainder in the reserves. While active and being combat arms you so much as sneezed the wrong way you would draw unwanted attention tp yourself. Being a military brat this was the norm for me, dress right dress was what I was brought up with so it came naturally to me, and trust me I was in front of the 1SG and CSM more times than I care to remember!
I had no problems with the regs whether it was Army wide or Troop/Plt level. We smoked in our tracks while downrange all the time, even with 40 some odd live 120mm rounds, we knew our 5th point of contact was toast if caught so if it came down to that we'd suck it up and drive on.
This was all back in the day before cell phones were everywhere, but someone catching you smoking while walking or smoking where you're not supposed to in garrison, let alone having the slightest malfunction on your uniform and you'd be told about it....and so would your chain of command. Suck it up and drive on.
Leaving RA and joining the USAR and being able to stick with it for as long as I did remains a mystery to me. In my eyes the level of discipline and professionalism was on par of a fast food joint at best. It was a little better in the sandbox but ultimately the lack of discipline and pride that came with wearing the uniform is what ultimately forced me out, plus the fact that I couldn't run to save my life!

If not being able to vape in the building bothers folks so much, do it in the latrine while offloading class 1 or 2, none would be the wiser and drive on!

On the nicotine testing for employment bit, my job now does it for entry into the hospital, don't know if they do pop tests but you have to be nic free to start.
