"Those things cause CANCER!"

In the past week I have had two people tell me "You know.....electronic cigarettes cause cancer!"

Both individuals were smokers.

The irony:

The first individual sounded as if he was going to die he was coughing so forcefully - while hitting an asthma inhaler a few times. I approached the individual to ask if he was ok and he said "Yes, I just got over pnuemonia and just found out that I have asthma. Really sucks considering I've been smoking the past 8 years."

I told him to check out the forum here and to give e-cigarettes a try and the first thing he said was "you know those things cause cancer right?"

Then yesterday it happened to both my wife and I while we were sitting at a Blackjack table in Las Vegas. One of the Pit Bosses (who works in a smoke filled casino - and definitely appeared to be a lifelong smoker himself) came up to our table and said the same thing I had heard previously: "You know those electronic cigarettes cause cancer."

In both situations I was somewhat dumbfounded and didn't exactly know how to answer..... Or more accurately where to begin.

Has anyone else encountered this? Where is this information coming from? And, how would you answer such a direct..... and seemingly inaccurate statement?

LOL, I was fishing last year and one of DH's work associates was there chewing and spitting all over said the same thing to me......Knowing how backwards and trashy he was anyways, I felt it best to just shake my head and walk away. Some people you just can't talk to......

Just tell them that water causes cancer, and oxygen causes cancer, cause anything can cause cancer, in the right amounts...then if they try to say you don't have any proof, tell them they don't either

Either "No, they dont." or "Yeah, cell phones cause cancer, too." with possibly an eye roll for either. I take it all with a grain of salt as my mother does nothing cancer-causing and she's a cancer survivor right now.
